I am a new member and I have installed the BOINC Manager on three different macs in the past few days (2 iMac G5s (PPC 10.4.8) and one MacMini (Intel 10.4.8). I am successful configuring the BOINC Manager and attaching the client to the project using the URL of http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org and my Member User Name and Password.
Everything works as it should (I can see the project name, messages, disk usage, etc) until I restart any of the clients. Once I restart and try to launch the BOINC Manager I get this error: BOINC Manager - Connection Error The password you've provided is incorrect, please try again. If I try to manually attach the client to the project by using: Advanced>Select Computer localhost My Member Password, I get the same connection error. This is happen whether I have BOINC in my startup items or not. Activity Monitor is reporting that the boinc service is running. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? After further troubleshooting, I have found that if I Force Quit the boinc service in Activity Manager, and then relaunch BOINC Manager, everything seems to work fine...

Not sure, but there is a default 32 hex password in the 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg' file. Have changed that to the same password as what i use to log into the website, to make it easy on the gray cells. Then attaching should work fine.
----------------------------------------Indeed, killing the BOINCmgr and relaunching it will re-establish the connection most of the times.

Then attaching should work fine. But why should changing this special password make a difference? It's not set by the user, and the user should never have to play with it as it only ensures local access to the BOINC service from the local manager and prevents remote access. If there's an issue here, changing the password in this file shouldn't make any difference for access to the service. On my systems, it certainly isn't set to anything I put in it, nor is it human readable by default. |

Changing that password didn't help me either... I even chose a new password on the website, but that didn't help.
After more testing, I have found where I think the problem lies, but have no idea on how to fix it. I was running BOINC as a system service with the Make_BOINC_Services.sh script (sorry to have left this out in my original post). When I completely eliminate this script and service everything runs fine with BOINC Manager. There must be something in the BOINC Startup Item that is not configured correctly/fubared when the service starts at boot up?? Only thing in the Startup Items>Boinc is the Boinc executable and the Startup Parameter.plist: { Description = "BOINC client daemon"; Provides = ("BOINC client daemon"); Requires = ("NFS"); OrderPreference = "Last"; } And as I said in my original post, I have to Force Quit the boinc service to stop the services, so it does seem like something is hanging with that service. As these are public computing lab computers that I'm configuring I really want the service to run all the time, not just when a user is logged in. Cheryl |

schepers, It's used also by e.g. BOINCview....believe me, if u access multiple devices from a single computer's BOINCmgr, it's easier to have a common password in that file on all installs. If u run multiple DC's it's recommend to set the accounts up with the same passwords too. Saves a lot of headaches.... don't use BAM/AMS but think the same goes for that instrument too.
----------------------------------------U can always bother to cut and past the 32 hex from that file. Normally if u type in a computer name BOINC remembers the password from the last time u entered it.

OK, I understand that as it controls remote accesses to the BOINC service. But that wasn't her problem. For access problems between one manager and one service, that password file can't be the problem. |

Just do what i just did to confirm:
-----------------------------------------Put a different but simple pasword into the file of any BOINC client -On that BOINC client take the 'select computer' option from the menu and type the 'localhost' or the network name of that client and the new password It should attach the local BOINC client/computer to the agent. Don't worry, the BOINC daemon continues to run. Just think of it as a network running on a single PC (using RPC to interact).

I resolved my issue and must admit that it was a stupid mistake on my part. When I ran the Make_BOINC_Service.sh, I left out the path to the data directory in the command itself. (I mis-read the instructions given with the script, reading steps 6 & 7 as an either/or situation, not both).
Thanks for all help and suggestions that were given. Cheryl |
