Am I missing the obvious...

How does one set up WCG to take advantage of dual-core?

I run an Opteron 165 at 2.46 GHz. In options I set throttle to 100% - now it runs one thread and utilizes one core. Do I have to run a separate agent and set affinity manually?

Thanks!! blushing

Re: Am I missing the obvious...

The UD.EXE agent for WCG will not run dual core.

You must exit the UD agent completely (so the icon goes away) and install the BOINC agent (and attach to www.worldcommunitygrid.org), which is designed to run with multicore computers. The overall project list is used for BOINC. Clicking the box to send other work if your preferred project is busy is also a nice feature. The device projects buried deeper in my grid are used for the UD version.

The network defaults to connect only every 0.1 days (2.4 hours). You can set that to 2-3 days if you want, and eventually get enough BOINC jobs in a queue to last a little while. (Don't set it too close to the 7 day deadline.) UDMonitor performs a similar function on the UD agent, but required a lot more babysitting. BOINC is really automatic, and also has project graphics now. Go for it!

BOINC will default to automatically run up to a quad core. A dual core will be no problem. Change the profile after you get your octo core.

A new release of UD.EXE to do this is being tested at grid.org but it will likely be awhile before it is used over here.

A throttle is not in use as yet on the BOINC agent.

You do not have to deinstall the UD agent. Just don't run it. There was recently an outage on the BOINC server, so some of us exited BOINC and fired up the old UD agent and got a little bit of work done until BOINC came back.
