FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER
Oh, you're using Fast User Switching. The simple solution is to switch Fast User Switching off. Thanks, but not a good option for me. It means the user's programs getting closed down. The diary, address book, phone, email program, calculator, browser and Adobe Reader Speed Launch all open at startup, and need to stay open. If they had to close each time the user logged off, it would take a lot longer to start them all up again than the current wait from fast user switching. I know this is a lot of programs to have open at startup, but it's the same number I had before installing WCG (and without a noticeable problem). |

FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER
Hello Tastylicious, The only other process CURRENTLY using a CPU time of >3 is System Idle Process at ~41. The UD client is running the WCG application throttled down to 60%, leaving about 40% of the CPU Time idle. This is supposed to keep heat lower than if it ran at 100%. The throttle can be changed, as explained at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 It sounds as though there is a problem with memory. Running small programs should alleviate that problem. I wonder if there is some setting that is storing and retrieving sessions when you change users? [Added: Didactylos has spotted it - Fast User Switching. I expect that is the reason for the slowdown. It is trying to keep each session alive, which takes a lot of memory.] Could you tell us the brand of your laptop and the model number? Also, the size allocated to your virtual memory. Task Manager shows Commit Charge at the bottom, showing how much VM is being used. View - Select Options allows you to view a lot of information in the Processes Tab, most of which is rarely important. Lawrence What would be my ideal throttle percentage? I have an Acer Aspire 2001 WLCi Centrino 1.4. It's labelled CL32 underneath, which, according to my searches on the net, is supposed to apply to the 2000, 2010 or 2020 (which I don't really understand). The commit charge says 891M / 1250M. Thank you for your help. |

FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER
FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER i think the poster can also just run the tasks as a 'screensaver', yes? that way it would only run when the poster is away. Thanks - I'll do this if it's impossible to run WCG all the time without it affecting the performance of other software. Would it be best to do this by checking the box in WCG Preferences, but keeping Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver at None (so resources aren't diverted to graphics)? Or would this stop it from running at all? Thank you for your help. |

Hello Tastylicious,
Ordinarily the screen saver is optional. I use 'blank' myself, to avoid wasting CPU power on graphics. However, if you choose the 'run only as screen saver' option in the Preferences View of the WCG panel, then you MUST run the WCG screen saver. In addition to the graphics routine, it contains the code to start and stop the WCG project application. An ordinary screen saver will not run the WCG project application. Most of our projects create huge arrays of hundreds of megabytes, mostly kept in Virtual Memory. I believe that you will have fewer problems if you stick to small projects like Genome Comparison and Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy. You can see some of the project requirements at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq though it does not list the virtual memory required. Lawrence |

Resources as in Memory Use and CPU time? Both are covered in the forthcoming 5.8 release. At own risk, one can download the 5.8.1 development version. Personally very happy with Threadmaster utility http://threadmaster.tripod.com/ to control CPU assignment and time for many applications, but it's not recommended for the novice or the faint at heart. Been using it for well over 6 months now without little to no hitch.

Heyo gang. How do we set the resources used by world community using a Boinc platform? Thankee-yee. If BOINC is already installed, and your WCG profile knows about it, go to My Grid, Device Manger, Device Profiles and you should see a BOINC Device Profiles section. Editing the settings for the default profile name should be enough. |

It has a simple UI and straightforward operation. You can find it at http://www.cpuidle.de/. ![]() |

I'm sorry for my previous post, :-). ![]() |

Threadmaster distributes CPU time but can also limit it. Set BOINC to 90% and it will not use more..... the rest remains free for all or gets a certain minimum if also at the lowest priority, but not entered in the parm table.
----------------------------------------Another not tried but positively reviewed CPU throttle utility is BES. It does have a GUI: http://mion.faireal.net/BES/ It's just been updated, so u might want to try, at own peril ;0
