Is there a way to request more work (if the servers are up of course) I want to run enough for about 5 days at work when I'm away for the holidays. The IT department will be disconnecting the internet connection so I won't be about to constantly be getting more WU. Is there something I can do or is it up to BONIC to decide how much I get.
thanks Jon Bahen |

Hello,
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default Go here and change your "connect to network every x days". (Note: this is of course if you are using the default device profile for BOINC). Remember to click save. Then in your BOINC agent, you'll need to select update project and it'll connect with our servers. Also, please note that there is a limit to how many workunits you can download per day so you may not be able to get enough work to last 5 days. -Uplinger |

My three fastest computers are all AMD 2.4GHz (equivalent to Intel 3.0-3.2GHz). Two of them have no problem filling up the queue for several days, which is especially good when the project is down (like now). Apparently they download at random times, which helps average out the daily maximum. Once in a while I see a message that it is set to 50 workunits.
----------------------------------------The third one will only download 10 workunits at a time for some strange reason, and must run them all before accepting more.

I've set my default "connect to network" value to 5 days but I can only download 10 units at a time. When I press Update after an hour, the (BOINC) manager displays that is "not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks." My computer can finish working on the 10 units in one day and I want to fill the queue with 50 units or more. By the way, is the project still down? I was able to download 10 units two hours ago and I requested an update just now but the manager said that the project is down.

try suspending work units that you have not started work on and then update project

Downloads are still not getting through to my system. Uploads can be sent.
----------------------------------------When things settle down and you have asked for a few days of work in the queue you just have to wait. Yes, an "update" really doesn't do much but annoy the server. It's really only useful if you see workunits that need to be reported or you change something in your profile (like changing the network days, above). As you work on more workunits, watch the BOINC messages. It should eventually ask for more and more work. New workunits should be sent automatically at random when you are connected. The queue should fill up. I had a specific problem with only getting 10 workunits at a time. That was due to running an alpha/beta 5.7 version of BOINC on one computer. When I reverted to the Windows 5.4.11 BOINC, my queue filled up in a hurry. Since I have set a 5 day queue myself, I am still working on some workunits I got before the outage and some I got during the brief uptime on Dec. 21 that are due on Dec. 28. There is a danger with suspending more than a few workunits. Your computer will be deemed "untrustworthy". You may get back less workunits than you suspended. You will be limited to only a few workunits per day after that. BOINC will have to start trusting it all over again, and the quota should increase.

Hello retsof,
----------------------------------------Well, I let BOINC run without being interrupted and I just don't know why it doesn't seem to go past its 10-unit "limit". :-( ![]() |

Have you aborted any workunits or had some bad workunits? If the computer is "unreliable", it will have a daily quota of only a few workunits.
----------------------------------------It may also depend on which project you are running. Some may not have enough work for everyone, and it is rationed. If you are running all projects, that should not make a difference. Sometimes BOINC just had a mind of its own. On one computer, I am finishing up some other projects that were running while the BOINC server was down. There are no workunits in the queue and one workunit is running. WCG is the only one set to accept new workunits right now. It will probably get completely empty before deciding to download new WCG, so I will leave it connected. It does not always manage a mix of projects very well. Best results are obtained on projects with similar due dates. When WCG is the only project selected, it will usually ask for more work and keep the queue full. In 30 minutes I will see what it does next. The queue is now empty. 12/27/2006 8:15:29 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi 12/27/2006 8:15:29 PM|World Community Grid|Reason: To fetch work 12/27/2006 8:15:29 PM|World Community Grid|Requesting 475200 seconds of new work Workunits 1-10 are being downloaded. reached daily quota of 50 results This is a local setting on the WCG server. After the holidays are over in January, we had better ask knreed what policies are currently in effect. I suspect that different computers have been registered under different maximum quotas. It is only recently that people have started talking about a hard limit of 10 work units in the forum. The 10 per transmission has been in place for a longer time. The 50 daily for GC is new to me, but guess it's there to allow for enough participants in this light weight project on slower machines.....we would not want to deplete this and let the single core / slow-er crunchers that specifically have it as their sign-up motivation to stare at an idle CPU. U would be peeve'd would u not?
----------------------------------------PS: Wonder if retsof has the "Alternate" work switched on?
