My experience with running BOINC is an entire 4 days, so I’m still trying to figure out what settings I should be using. I’m starting with everything at default.
The last few days I noticed my computer turning to glue. The problem seems to be that BOINC isn’t running in the background. For instance, the task manager shows wcg_hdc_tma_5.14_windows_intelx86 at 97 CPU usage when I’m trying to run my email and Firefox. Something gotta’ give and so far it’s not BOINC. So what to do? I could set my preferences not to run BOINC during the day when I’m using my computer, but I’d rather let it run when it can. So is this abnormal and not working right or is there some way to tell BOINC not to be such a resource pig? I’ve tried verbally explaining the problem to Firefox and she’s not listening. Please answer using very small, non-techie words. :~) Cheri |

It is running at the lowest priority. This means that when your programs are using 5%, BOINC will use 95%. When your programs use 3%, BOINC will use 97%. When your programs use 100%, BOINC will use nothing at all.
However, the Help Defeat Cancer program uses a lot of memory and large files. Unless you have lots of memory, you may see the occassional slowdown, particularly when BOINC is saving a checkpoint file (like an autosave feature). If your computer is really turning to glue, then something is wrong. Things you can do: make sure BOINC is limited to one processor. If you have a dual core or hyperthreaded CPU, then this will halve the memory use. Try one of the other WCG projects. Help Defeat Cancer needs hundreds of megabytes of memory, but Genome Comparison (for example) only uses 10-30 MB. |

Okay. Thanks. I have 1 gig of RAM, single core, and thought it was enough for the cancer project.
