I am evaluating problems with putting 20 Athlon 64 machines (WinXP) from our classroom on the grid and am looking for anyone that has knowlege considering the following restrictions - including installation guides.
1. The machines are running under control of a program 'DeepFreeze' that allows no permanent changes to the C partition (the fixed state is restored with a power cycle). Additional partitions are used for 'persistent' student data. 2. We typically run 3 two hour classes per day - 5 days a week, and our recommendation to the students is to cycle power prior to each class to restore the machine to a known state. 3. Because we are teaching students how to use their machines at home, there is only 1 user with administrator status. Any help would be appreciated SeniorNet Learning Center - Willows San Jose, CA |

Pia, I work with Deep Freeze in our training labs all the time, and have installed both BOINC and the UD agent to co-exist with it. All the details I've documented are at my WCG installation site. I've not put my documentation online regarding BOINC, but I will soon.

Peter;
Thank you for your quick response. I've only briefly looked at your reference, but it looks promising. We use DF Basic, not Pro - but it seems that using a separate partition for the install will work. Am I correct in assuming that the registry entries are the only thing left on C: and that they are static once the client is configured? RonS |

That's a great site, there should be such a chapter on WCGwiki.org We're working on it... schepers has agreed to donate some material to the site. We've also had an offer from another translator. Got to get it all sorted out, but I'm moving house right now, so things are a little... hectic. |

We use DF Basic, not Pro - but it seems that using a separate partition for the install will work. Does DF basic allow thawspaces to be created? if so, this is the simplest way to go. If not, yes you will have to split the disk into one more partition. Just remember that this partition will be completely open to students mucking about with it no matter what you do. Am I correct in assuming that the registry entries are the only thing left on C: and that they are static once the client is configured? If you are using the UD agent, yes. It uses minimal registry entries, and all in the current user hive. I don't think it even needs admin rights to install. If you are using BOINC, it uses more registry entries, it requires admin rights to install as a service, and I've not investigated whether the reg entries are mostly static or dynamic. I'm in the process of updating my web site with my BOINC results as I've been testing it for about 2 weeks now so keep checking back there. |

I seem to recall that the only important registry entry for the UD client is created by the throttle tool if you choose to override the default 60% usage setting.

BOiNC registry entries are seemingly limited to the window position and format... things like column choices/widths.... nothing critical. If u delete everything in the registry related to BOiNC, it will happily continue.

Peter;
DF Basic does not use thawspaces, only partitions. But we are running WinXP Pro, and I hope that I can find something there (My kingdom for the world to dump Windows and go Linux ) We use DF Basic, not Pro - but it seems that using a separate partition for the install will work. If u delete everything in the registry related to BOiNC, it will happily continue. Or, to be more precise: all the registry entries are for BOINC Manager. The core client has no registry entries. Of course, there are the standard Windows service and uninstall registry sections, but any admin should be familiar with how they relate to their desktop build. |
