BOINC Error Detection
I have experienced again a problem whereby a small window gives the error message: BOINC Manager -- Newtork Status BOINC failed to disconnect from the Internet No problem with the error message. Error's do happen. However, the mini-window regenerates itself in an infinate loop filling up the screen and freezing the computer (well mostly). "Ctrl alt del" brings up the "WIndows task Manager" where the ("Bonicmgr.exe") end process can be executed. No other known way to kill off the continuous loop. One then needs to restart Boinc. This looping has happened before but first time using 4.5.11. The system can work itself into total freeze and only way to stop is for a reboot and quickly entering the Windows Task Manager for end process. Not a nice thing to happen at 2am Saturday night and find out Monday morning a system is frozen. Could be OK for one system but if it's a controling server lots of problems and bad PR. I would think that there would be a counter/timer that reaches a magic numer and stops error message execution or smarter still, attemps to access internet with single error message on failure (need to look at both connect/disconnect). Then the user can cleanup the system. The error message needs additional info for network management in a maintenance FAQ ? I'm planning on building a system similiar to: by olympic: Here's another 22GHz for the grid! http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/listthreads?forum=41 If the error loop happened to a system as in the above, I'd really be lost for sure -- Life's mysteries. Please will you give us some more information:
Windows version BOINC version The circumstances causing the error message Then we can have a look at the bug and pass it on to the BOINC developers. |

I tried but in Advanced, Options: connections tab will not let me change the older ISDN setting to LAN (DSL)! I tried reset, it clears out but then comes back with ISDN which is on a different NIC card from the DSL. Note the problem has not repeated but It has something to do with contacting the server. Conditions ??? I was just sitting at the console when it started sending the error message. They repeated so quickly I couldn't close them fast enought so had to use task manager to end Boinc. Restarted and it has not yet reappeared. running Win XP sp2 Boinc 5.4.11 Using both ISDN and DSL for LAN always on, no disconect needed |

Got a Search add in for BOiNC in my Firefox which popped up this result:
----------------------------------------http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/?search=disconnect&a...zilla-search&offset=0 Look at number 9 General Preferences Page, then 2.8 " Disconnect when done" and change it over if it comes up again. I've deselected all network options in the BOiNC Advanced options.... it simply assumes the same as in internet explorer's 'never dial a connection'. ciao abstract (from someone enjoying it it seems): Disconnect when done This is a setting that will allow you to control if BOINC will terminate the connection to your Internet Service Provider when it is done with its interchange with the BOINC and Project servers. When I was a user of Compuserve, I had a local connection and a plan that allowed unlimited connect time, so, I had a separate phone line that was used to do my connection to the Internet and I did not want any programs disconnecting me because they thought they knew when I was done. Again your use of this setting is only important if you have only dial-up Internet service. Thankfully, I have cable modem access and this is no longer an issue for me. But you may not be so fortunate, but you may have accesses such that it always seems that BOINC is cutting you off. But you have to be careful here also, if you set this to "No", then it is possible while you are on a 6 day vacation you realize BOINC is calling the servers and will be running up your long distance bill. Fear not, you can change this setting, assuming you can access the Internet, because you can leap in here and change this parameter and the next time that BOINC contacts the servers it will get the change in the preferences and will start to hang up when it is done. Whew!
