So I installed it, no problem. Now its been sitting here for over 3 hours and its working on a genome comparison. Its 35% done. I have dual core and gig of ram. Total run time and points are at zero. it claims i still have only set aside one gig of hd space when i went onto the site and changed it to ten.
Why so long? Why no points or time? Why no update in hd space? any answers would be great thanks :) |

The points and time are only updated when the work unit is complete. The % done is only an estimate.
Your settings will also update when the work unit completes and the agent talks to the WCG servers. If you want to take advantage of both your cores, you need to use BOINC. UD only uses one core, and is throttled to 60% by default. You are only using 30% of your computing power. |

if he wants to, he could set the throttle to 100% right ?
----------------------------------------then his cpu would show 50% with the UD agent on a dual core... or with boinc he can use both cores at 100% correct? [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 6, 2006 11:00:43 AM] |

Correct, halfcard.
The UD client throttle control program can be downloaded from http://worldcommunitygrid.org/files/WCGridMaxCPU.exe and is explained at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 Lawrence |

I've been running UD on all my machines for about a month, and just a few days ago started testing BOINC on a few of these. This meant removing the UD install, but I made sure to stop the UD process when it had just finished a work unit.
After the switchover, I noticed by watching the stats online that it takes several days for the downloaded jobs to pipeline through the entire process of download, process, finish/upload & await validation, and finally award points. So once you run either UD or BOINC for a few days, about 3, your machine(s) will settle into a "groove" and points will start coming in consistently. It all takes time. |

UD never has a delay as it has no quorum... credit upon delivery on the agent, and update of personal stats on the website every 6 hours.
----------------------------------------For BOiNC, per knreed usually > 90% of work gets returned within 4x24 hours.... on average quorum 3 does get established under 4 days. One can monitor status here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do. Once a workunit is validated, it flows into the next 6 hourly statistics update of the website.

Interesting detail to know about BOINC, and I wondered why I was seeing the delay in "pending confirmation". It did appear to take around 3 days to fully confirm a result.
Why the difference between UD and BOINC... why no confirmation on UD uploads? Aren't they subject to the same issues that could affect BOINC processing, and hence corruption? |

The benchmark routine for UD is run every result completion and is protected. Behind the scenes there is still a quorum 3 validation. With the open source BOiNC, the benchmark value could be subject to tampering. By postponing the points award until the 3 copies are returned and comparing the claims, a server side algorithm can determine whether hi claims were 'too'. Same time it protects the too low claimers, as often they've done the work much faster than the benchmark would have let to believe.
----------------------------------------Extensive discussions have taken place on the various (see other threads) and resulting in preliminary adjustment to be followed with a permanently revision, if deemed appropriate, to improve equality i.e. equal points for flops processed/real work effort.
