It seems like despite the computer's power settings the hard drives won't shut off and the computer won't standby after the specified idle time when the agent is running. Is this supposed to happen--can I fix it?

The only way i can think of is to set a work schedule which approximates your regular time of required shutdown. E.g. if u set UD to crunch from 08:00-22:00 your computer should go idle after 22:00 and than proceed to close according to your power saving settings.
----------------------------------------Obviously in the example, when u would start up your computer at 07:45, with a shortcut in the auto-startup folder, UD would start only at 08:00. If u would use the auto-hibernation, rather than shutdown, UD would resume where it left off without a second loss. Edit: Here's where u can set the schedule: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do Assuming u have only a 'Default' profile, select the custom time and days. cheers

I was also wondering the same thing as the first guy. I really want to save some energy by enabling my computer's s3 standby state after 10 minutes of idle time. I am on the computer for a decent chunk of the day and I figure that WCG can run then. The rest of the day and in the night I want the computer to be in s3 standby so as to save energy. Yet the windows agent keeps it from going into standby because I assume windows thinks that a process is executing (which it is, but you know what I mean).
The scheduled task thing is kinda a solution, but I am often on the computer at very different times of the day, so its not an ideal solution. The ideal solution would be for the computer to go into s3 standby after 10 minutes of inactivity (from anything other than WCG). Is it possible that there is a place in windows where I can make the WCG agent a program that can be running and enter standby anyway? Any help on this topic is much appreciated, thank you in advance. |

BTW this last post was written when I was using the UD agent. Since I have posted this, I have switched to the BIONIC agent so now I am using that. However, the agent does not allow my system to go into standby, so I still have the same problem.
I guess I will also make a thread in the BIONIC forum too, as this affects both agents. |

This issue will be fixed in BOINC 6. It's one of the features WCG are helping with, because energy efficiency is important to corporate grid users as well as users everywhere.

When it's done. It is barely started at the moment.
If I had to estimate, I'd say mid-2008. |

It seems like despite the computer's power settings the hard drives won't shut off and the computer won't standby after the specified idle time when the agent is running. Is this supposed to happen--can I fix it? Getting back on the original HD part, BOINC has a feature to set the frequency of disk saving. Maximum is 999 seconds here. May be worth a try to experiment with the HD power saving feature. Complete shutdown of 10 minutes is not a lot. That could theoretically cause multiple 'stand-by' events in a day, would thus suggest to look more towards 30 minutes as an end-of-day close when the feature does come operational.
