I have been only getting faah work units so as a test I removed the check mark on faah. I have a computer with 512M Bytes so I can not do cancer but should be able to do either hpf2 or gc. The server refused to give me any work until I put the check mark back on faah. I am running boinc on a linux computer so maybe the other two projects do no support linux.

HPF2 is not ready for boinc as far as I know and you need to be running version 5.4 or higher for linux to get any gc work. -Brink |

I forgot to add that I'm getting the gc units on my Fedora 6 and RedHat EL4 linux boxes. So yes, it does work on linux.

Hi Rick,
----------------------------------------The reason why BOiNC 5.4 or higher is required to get Genome Comparison is, because it's the first WCG project to use the data compression features during transmission. Latest Stock, preferred, is 5.4.9, which you can obtain here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php. cheers

This would have been more if I had not noticed it and than clicked on the update button to force another work unit. I am running a 64 bit operating system(Ubuntu) and every time I get a work unit the time to completion is more than 1 week. I do not think I ever take more than 5 hours to complete a unit though. It must be the lack of support for 64 bit operating system that is causing these problems. |

Rick, please open your client_state.xml file and look for the duration_correcton_factor. What is it?

Here it is <duration_correction_factor>22.773251</duration_correction_factor>. I do not know how to edit it since firefox is used to display it and it is a read only file.

It's just a text file. Open it in a text editor, and set the factor back to 1.0
Then restart BOINC. |

I tried to edit the client_state.xml file. I changed the duration_correction_factor number to 1.000000. The program seems to make backup copies of the file with the last character being ~. It seems the the number very quickly goes back to a number greater than 20. It now does not ever get another work unit unless I click on the update button. I also have never gotten any other work other than faah.

Rick,
I checked the record for that machine. For that machine you have returned 12 FightAIDS@Home results and 2 Genome Comparison results. We have weighted the sending of work based upon how much work their is available for each project and the rate at which the scientists are able to send us additional workunits. The FightAIDS@Home project has the highest weight and Help Defeat Cancer and Genome Comparison are weighted lower. Thus you should expect to receive more work for FightAIDS@Home then other projects. As you noted that machine doesn't have enough memory to qualify for Help Defeat Cancer so it shouldn't get any of those workunits. Having said that your computer is having worse luck then it should (i.e. you should be getting more Genome Comparison results then you have been) and the message about not finishing in time doesn't seem likely for your computer (average turnaround is under a day). I will take a look again at our estimated values for the workunits we are sending out. If our estimates vary too much between the different applications this could cause that problem (which is what Didactylos is looking for). One thing I would like you to try. Can you set that computer to get only Genome Comparison work but also check the box to allow work from other applications if none is available for the projects you checked? That will keep it working and provide some information about what is going on. thanks, Kevin |
