Hi,
Just installed it, to squeeze the best out of the cpu time, but in the wcgrid profile options i encountered some trouble 1. I have finished work on boinc and it sent it to the server. back in UD client I could see my current points. Where can I do that in BOINC? the statistics tab is empty as if i didn't do any work. 2. in the device profile options there are a few settings which I don't what they mean and the BOINC website does poor job explaining them (if at all) - Do work only after computer is idle for ? what does this mean? It doesn't work all the time? please explain to me. - Disconnect when done? If this is set to yes, then would the internet connection be disconnected only when BOINC has started the internet connection or every time it is done doing that it needs from the connection? I don't need my internet connection be disconnected all the time - Connect to network about every ? right now it is set by default to 0.1 days. that means it will connect to the internet 10 times a day? what for? what does this option mean? in the Results Status I see now (since I sent the work done in BOINC) that i have 83 claimed but 0 granted. When will I recieved the point for the work that is done? and lastly, I see that I need to press update after BOINC finishes the work in order to send the results? I hope I am mistaken.. Thanks in advance! |

Hi ZURP,
----------------------------------------Finally ready for the big plunge than ;>) . There's lots of info here and elsewhere..... enjoy the ride. TO see the situation with your work units returned, visit the Result Status page for BOiNC: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do 2. in the device profile options there are a few settings which I don't what they mean and the BOINC website does poor job explaining them (if at all) - Do work only after computer is idle for ? what does this mean? It doesn't work all the time? please explain to me. IF u have selected to have the agent process in the background with YES, this option has no function. Only when u want it to work when the machine is idle will this tell how long to wait before the agent starts processing. - Disconnect when done? If this is set to yes, then would the internet connection be disconnected only when BOINC has started the internet connection or every time it is done doing that it needs from the connection? I don't need my internet connection be disconnected all the time THIS has really no function when permanently connected to the internet, but it does not harm to leave it on Yes as default. - Connect to network about every ? right now it is set by default to 0.1 days. that means it will connect to the internet 10 times a day? what for? what does this option mean? THE default is 0.1 days, equivalent to 2.4 hours interval. BOiNC makes sure that enough work is on your machine for at least that time period. Effectively while one Work Unit is progressing it will towards middle / end get a new one. It will start the new one when previous finished and simultaneous send the result of last completed work unit. UD could do that only sequentially. in the Results Status I see now (since I sent the work done in BOINC) that i have 83 claimed but 0 granted. When will I recieved the point for the work that is done? FOR each work unit, 3 copies are send out. Only when all 3 copies are returned and valid are the credits granted. Click on any Workunit Name, left column to see the status of the 3 copies. and lastly, I see that I need to press update after BOINC finishes the work in order to send the results? I hope I am mistaken. YOU can, if u are in a rush, but the scheduler will eventually send the 'Ready To Report' task confirmation when time is there. Normally that should happen within your schedule, which per Connect To Network is 0.1 days (2.4 hours). It's all designed to optimize the communication which has been discussed in other posts of this support section. Thanks in advance! For more information read The BOINC Preferences profile Explained The BOiNC Agent Support Section with many of the same and more questions and answers. Thank you for the quick answers!
----------------------------------------just another quick question, When I was with UD, FAAH used to give me 400-700 points per result that I send. Now, BOINC is giving 50 points per result Is this for real? If so, there is no purpose for the points because for the same work you get different points. I don't understand the reason to have different scoring systems for the 2 clients if eventually they are compared in one statistics table. In utterly voids the enitre top cruncher/scorer idea because there is no way two identical machines, one running UD and on running BOINC, would score the same. BOINC would always be left behind. For this, I am considering switching back to UD, where crunching is appreciated.. please respond to this. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 25, 2006 7:33:24 AM] |

Slowly Slowly ZURP,
----------------------------------------It's only 8:30 Saturday morning...... Just apply the factor 7 to the points u see in the BOiNC client. The 50 u mention... is that your claim or the actual credit? The claims of the 3 copies is added and divided by 3, thus a 50-60-70 claim in the quorum would give u 60 credit which translates to 420 points. The morning stats update has just finished, so please check your credits here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewStatisticsByDevice.do. BOiNC is much more efficient than UD. For almost all it the hourly points average goes up.....just monitor it for a few weeks. cheers

![]() sorry if I sound a little upset (as you said its morning..) If its multiplied by 7 its about the same I guess, still I don't understand the reason for this (maybe its beyond me) the 50 I said was the granted BOINC credit. I will check in the weeks to come (I won't be home, so hopefully the automated connection will work) thanks sekerob for the patiance ![]() |

Hello ZURP,
The World Community Grid began by running the UD client. A year later we added the BOINC client, which let us run on Linux and Mac as well as Windows and which runs multiple threads. BOINC has its own point system, different from the UD points we were already using. We multiply BOINC points by 7 and add them to your member statistics (which may already have UD points). You can compare your BOINC-only points with other BOINC projects. Lawrence |

![]() sorry if I sound a little upset (as you said its morning..) If... I guess, still I don't understand the reason for this (maybe its beyond me) .... thanks sekerob for the patiance ![]() Hi SURP and Welcome. I'm just a minor cruncher here who holds no fame. However, I had the same problem with the "points". I then looked at the points more in dept and realized that they were meaningless to me. What I decided is important is the number of Work Units (WU's) processed and valid for the individual projects. That is an average (a mean would be better) over time. I initially tried United Devices (UD) on a linux box that has since crashed (not fixed yet). So, I came over to this HP box and started running with BOINC. Has been happy time since. Your doing good! Keep up the good works. PaulT |
