Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Whew!!! I had a close call. My main machine, the "family" computer quit working. I got the call at work that it was locked, unresponsive. The three finger salute was ineffective. The power was cut and then it would not even reboot. The first thought was the HD was fried. When I got home I pulled it and tried it on another machine, but without success. Could not even get the bios to recognize it. (Dumkopf - you forgot to change the jumper setting). Broke down and bought a new HD. Installed it. Could not get the machine to even boot from CD for a fresh install. Light bulb goes on in my head. Maybe the power supply is fried. Go look through the parts computers to try to find a compatible one. Luck strikes - I find one that looks like it will work. Install replacement power supply. Fire up the machine with the original drive installed. SUCCESS!!!!. Shut down, install new drive as slave, fire up machine, prep new drive and BACK UP ALL THE IMPORTANT FILES ON THE MASTER TO THE SLAVE (a task I had been procrastinating on way too long). Family can now satisfy email withdrawal. smile Back to normal crunching.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I live in Iowa now, and people just look confused when I tell them about getting stuck at a friend's house during the Halloween blizzard, and having to wade through hip-deep snow in my Halloween costume, which was a medival dress with a sweep train.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I see Winona State, of southeastern Minnesota, has added in their lab machines. It looks like they have some pretty high powered units. Hopefully they can get more of their campus machines involved. Go Winona!!!
