Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

Hello Dirk Gently,
Sounds like something went wrong. You probably want to reboot. You can see if anybody else has this problem with that unit by clicking on My Grid - Device Manager - Results Status and then selecting that work unit.

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

Dirk, this is a rare (but normal) occurance. Each work unit has its own built-in limit (much less than your total BOINC space limits) to prevent one work unit from taking all the space.

Normally the estimated space is plenty (500MB for HDC), but sometimes a work unit will need more space. The techs will reissue this work unit with a bigger limit set, or examine it to see why it is using so much space.

Of course, it could just be you having this problem. Check the Results Status page to see what has happened to the other copies as Lawrence suggests.

Thanks Both

I have looked at the Workunit status.

It has now errored for 4 users including me, and is currently being processed by a further 3 users.

I assume there is a limit to the number of times a bad WU can be sent out?

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

Normally with a distro of 3, the additional copy sending is stopped after 4 errors. Number 1 error forced copy 4 to send, error 2 forced copy 5 to send, error 3 forced copy 6 to send.

If in the case where it was initially a set of 4, which happened in error Friday a week ago and last Wednesday, then 7 will be the number. Knreed wrote up a post about 1.5 months ago, where he laid out that it can go up to 14 depending on the order of events and types of returns.....inconclusive, no reply, error, invalid etc.

PS the space error happened to me and a few others reporting this with an other project where they were set at 50mb......500mb is a different order of magnitude.....and we're lucky the scientists managed to squeeze it down from the original 1.2g raised eyebrow

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

I believe 5 errors will cause the grid servers to abort the WU completely. Up to a dozen or more can be issued in the case of "inconclusives".

Looks like I've had the same WU and got the same error you did. Never seen that error before and it hasn't popped up since. confused

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

The 500MB limit on the Help Defeat Cancer workunits is used by BOINC in two ways.

1) Only computers with at least 500MB of free disk space allocated to BOINC will be assigned workunits for Help Defeat Cancer

2) If, during the processing the workunit, the disk space utilized for the workunit exceeds this threshold, then the workunit is aborted and returned to the server as an error.

This means that when we choose this value we have to set it to be the lowest value that doesn't cause workunits to be incorrectly marked as errors.

This workunit is the first workunit on Help Defeat Cancer on BOINC that has had this condition (out of over 22,000 workunits completed so far). We will watch this and see if other workunits encounter the same problem. If so we will up the limit for all Help Defeat Cancer workunits.

We have in fact raised the limit for this workunit to 750MB and we will re-run it.

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

Kevin, can that be a correct number 22,000? Projects stats show per yesterday:

Help Defeat Cancer Project Statistics
Statistics Last Updated: 08/07/2006 12:06:03 (UTC) [3 hour(s) ago]
Totals:
Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) 271:042:15:09:20
Points Generated 80,947,444
Results Returned 419,212

thx

PS this is at 26k WU's per day meaning we're hitting half a million by Friday 11

Re: HDC Fail with "Maximum disk usage exceeded" error

Sekerob,

The stats you show are for both UD and BOINC combined. Whereas Kevin's comment was about BOINC only. This is where the difference comes in.

Hope that helps,
-Uplinger
