Re: We're going to kick your BUTT!!!

I agree with you to a point.
There is much satisfaction in recruiting people not only to your team but to a project itself.

Getting new people involved is much more satisfying than simply gaining a member from A.N.Other team to one's own.

I would think that most folk that join a team from within this board are folk that are new to the project or existing members previously riding alone.

I wish your team well........and the more new folk you bring in the better for the project as a whole, as we are all strands of the same big team with the same goals.

Many of the big teams here actually came "en masse" from other projects and you will find that much of their recruiting is not done here but at their own forums.

Having a fun team thread here just helps things along.

Teams are kinda limited I suppose when they are "specific"........I for example don't drink so homebrew has little appeal.

Anyway.........look forward to seeing your team climb the rankings smile

Re: We're going to kick your BUTT!!!

You see Bill

In your initial post it was, you have to admit, a thinly veiled recruiting message ...
What??? My homebrew must be affecting my thinking because _I_ thought that when I said "... you shamelessly recruit from within the WCG, but we will STILL kick your butts by recruiting OUTSIDE WCG" ... that I was indicating that I did _NOT_ think too highly of the practice of recruiting from within. Why do you think that my clear statement about our "recruiting _OUTSIDE_ WCG" is a veiled attempt to do just the opposite? I'm not clever enough to use reverse psychology, but perhaps my new signature line will work anyway. Please check it and let me know if it's okay. At any rate, I changed it mostly because I figure that this might be the main reason you think I've been fishing for recruits. Well, unfortunately my homebrew has affected me to the point that I can't see a way to change my signature block in individual posts, even after previewing my message. Maybe someone can advise how to do it. And by the way, I also notice -- even in this thread -- posts by others with signatures which invite people to join their teams, but I can't see any reason why they, or I, ought to have to fart around (oops, is "fart" a word that is 'kid friendly'?) ... changing our sig lines depending upon which forum we're in.
... and now you have absolutely broken another of the forum rules as this is now a blatant attempt at recruiting for your team with links to your teampage etc (btw you've got that wrong too.)
I got _what_ wrong? The link is to the HomeBrewers' team page; I just checked it. And as for the other link, for gosh-sakes, it is to the page that I use to recruit NEW people who happen to be _homebrewers_ (my website is about homebrewing, after all), and I don't see why it can only be discussed on the team forum. After all, maybe someone here can make helpful suggestions or maybe it might inspire someone to use a similar page on their own website.
Now I'm sure you will agree we could all do this and mayhem would be the result - that is why we have a team forum. ... snip ...
Okay, from now on ... EVERYTHING about HomeBrewers will be in the team forum only. I apologize for not correctly understanding how these forums are used.
I'd claim you to be guilty of flagrant propaganda on behalf of your team wink
Well, I think that's what we've been discussing, and I disagree. Rather, I see it as a challenge to make everyone else's team work harder so that a loud mouth like me doesn't humiliate them in the coming months by kicking their ... their ... their derrieres (I doubt too many little kids know what that means, okay?).
In addition to the at least 7 counts against you on WCG forum etiquette
1. Including the subject line, I think I used axs and/or butt twice, and hxll once. That's 3.
2. _MAYBE_ I've been a bit obnoxious. That's 4.
3. _MAYBE_ I've been rude, although I don't see how. But I'll make that #5.
4. Assuming it's a 'no-no' to speak about drinking homebrews, that's #6.
So then, where is #7?
Now why would it be that all those school kids use language like you have used today?
Lots of reasons, but probably movies and TV as much as anything. There is a KIDS movie out called "Racing Stripes", about a bunch of talking animals and a zebra who thinks he's a race horse. Interestingly enough, when "Stripes" -- the zebra -- challenges a race horse, he says, and I quote: "... after I kick your butt." Now, I just watched the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" (my wife had it on ... HONEST), and Sammy's reflection in the mirror just called her a "crazy BXTCH". Now, that is on main network TV here in the U.S. at 12:30pm, and there are no telling how many little pre-schoolers are present while their mom's watch stuff like that. So I honestly do think that you have blown this all out of proportion.
Here's to happy crunching
Sam
And a 'Happy New Year' to you and everyone else here at the WCG.
Cheers.

Re: We're going to kick your BUTT!!!

Still, while I am disappointed in our team size, I am very happy with our team performance. Anyone who is interested can obviously check our exact stats on our team-page -- http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do -- so just let me summarize by bragging that we moved into the top 20% in all categories in just 37 days, and I am very confident that virtually all of our members are new to grid computing. I have what I think is an excellent recruitment page here -- http://tinyurl.com/b7ofs -- and if I can ever get 'Google' to pick up my site on their search engine, then maybe I will have better success.

You have linked to the wrong page. You want http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=7B2MW3MRP1. The link you used (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do) links to the team page of the logged in member. So for me, it goes to my team page, and for you it goes to yours.

Re: We're going to kick your BUTT!!!

Hey and I've been nice about it

btw your sig line is not strictly true either

We are all in the World Community Grid as we are all here to crunch for the one big team that is "Team WCG" you just have to quit one team and join HomeBrewers to become a member of your Team Bill

What is wrong with recruiting passers by on the forum onto your team?

You just have to make your team most welcoming to your target audience and then it's simply member choice as to which team they support. You get out of it what you put in. It takes time and a great deal of patience.

Launching a tirade against all teams in the wrong forum, failing to observe the forum that you posted in rules and then retaliating against the forum admins...

It's probably not the best way to proceed

I wish you luck Bill

Re: We're going to kick your BUTT!!!

btw Recruiting Sigs are fine

You don't have to change it if you chat in the chat room.

While you chat here folk reading this forum get to know you and maybe if they like what they read they might click on the link in your sig and join your team - that's a given. Similarly helping out folk in the other forum options on the WCG might raise your teams presence on the Grid (and it would help us old tired CA's out a bit too)

You will notice however in this particular forum no-one in their post directly promotes their team. That is what the team forum is all about

I don't recall saying that you weren't _nice_, but I do get the impression that you are perhaps overreacting to most of what I've said and done. Pointing out that my sig line is not strictly true is a good example. It was said 'tongue in cheek'; another way to put it is that I was being sarcastic in a subtle way to over-emphasize that you've got my motives dead wrong, but you have apparently taken it too literally, as well. Maybe I can send you a few of my homebrews to get you to loosen up a bit. wink

I am well aware of both of those points, and I completely agree.
What is wrong with recruiting passers by on the forum onto your team?
Whatever floats your boat, but what is wrong with me questionning why the largest teams in the WGC seem to be so aggressively recruiting from within the WCG. More importantly, what is wrong with me questionning how in the heck any newbie can derive any sense of pride of accomplishment by joining a team that is already number one? Big deal; you join the number one team and it stays number one. I think it's more fun and productive to get people to join teams at the bottom of the ranks and have them work to move up the ladder by becoming active in recruiting people from outside the WCG. That will be of even greater benefit to the only team that matters anyway -- the WCG that we are all a part of.
You just have to make your team most welcoming to your target audience and then it's simply member choice as to which team they support. You get out of it what you put in. It takes time and a great deal of patience.
Well, I'd imagine that only a small percentage of team members probably engage in any socializing, so I don't know that very many people join a particular team for that reason. Besides that, they are still free to engage in conversations in any forum or thread that they choose, so I can't imagine that any of them feel like they are restricting themselves whatsoever when they pick one team over another. But I'm new here, and I could be wrong.
Launching a tirade against all teams in the wrong forum, failing to observe the forum that you posted in rules and then retaliating against the forum admins...

It's probably not the best way to proceed
Tirade?? As a couple of other posters put it earlier in this thread, it was a good-humored, good-natured funny post that I just made in fun; it is a very common practice, where I come from (U.S.A.), to "talk smack" ... in even the friendliest of competitions. That's the way it was intended, and you appear to be the only person who misinterpreted it as a "tirade". And I'm also accustomed to intelligent debate, so I fail to see how questionning and discussing these rules, and more importantly, just one or two interpretations of it, constitutes "retaliating" against forum admins. As long as we remain civil, are we not allowed to challenge your "interpretations"? Now, if I sent you a Budweiser to loosen you up a bit, instead of a nice tasty homebrew, then _THAT_ would be retaliation. Hey, I'm not accusing anyone of being anal retentive; you were probably just raised in a culture that has absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever, and that's not your fault. But failing to lighten up a bit when it's been brought to your attention ... well, you're only cheating yourself of a good time in life if you can't see humor and 'kidding around' for what it is -- light-hearted fun.

I wish you luck Bill
