Hello there. I have a system set up where I do one work unit at a time, I dont have several running at once like some people do. I have a p4 3.2ghz machine and plan to get one of the new quad units. if I do, and I use my existing system of running 1 fah work unit at a time, will I see a big increase in speed from my new machine? My understanding of the new quad machines is that they have 4 CPU cores, running at about 2ghz each. therefore, this means you can run more work units at once. If I run just 1 work unit, will it go at the speed of a machine with a 2.1ghz CPU or will it be really really fast and run at 8 or 9 ghz? Thanks.

No. FightAIDS@Home isn't multi-threaded. This means that to use all the cores, you have to run 4 work units at once.

AFAIK there are no SMP projects available anywhere under BOINC.----------------------------------------

so can you tell me what exactly will happen if I try running 1 WU at a time on a quad system? will it run slower than it would on my p4 3.2ghz machine?

I'd say YES, Multiple cores only let you run multiple tasks.---------------------------------------- "Patience is a virtue", I can't wait to learn it!

Hi,---------------------------------------- A multicore CPU is nothing more than the collection of several CPUs in one package. A Quad @ 2 GHz is finally 4 CPUs (single core) @ 2 GHz. If you wish to devote one core only to WCG activities, you will run one (of the 4 CPUs) @ 2 GHz (and not one core @ 4*2 GHz). Because BOINC is clever and use all possible computing resources appropriately, it is meaningful to enroll all available cores and not only one. Cheers,

Now I am even more confused. I want to run 1 work unit at a time on my new computer. I want a new computer that will run fah work units faster than the p4 3.2ghz. Which sort of CPU should I get?

New processors are dual or quad core chips. So there are 2 or 4 cores, and your P4 has only a one core. So either way, your other programs don't disrupt your FAAH calculations, when you have calculation power in reserve.---------------------------------------- And what comes to the core speed, P4 3,2 GHz seems to be equal with 1,8 GHz Core2Duo. See the chart for more information. /M EDIT: wrong link [Edit 1 times, last edit by mikaado at Aug 8, 2008 7:29:19 AM]

Hi there. I'm not quite sure what I'm meant to be looking at, I am totally blind and my voice synthesiser doesn't read the chart to me properly. Sorry if it seems like I'm dumb, all I want is for each fah work unit to run faster. Can you help? Thanks

gents/ladies, can we get the abbreviation right: FAAH or FA@H. This fah has nothing to do with WCG.---------------------------------------- thanks (thinking of replacing the Q6600 cpu with a cheap Q9300)
