Category/file descriptions not working

Hello,
I'm currently using joomla v1.7.2 and the 1.7 compatible Phoca download extension.
It seems that category and file descriptions aren't working. If I give a file or category a description and hit save, and then go and edit the file or category, the description is gone, and it never shows up on the front end (I have descriptions set to display). So it looks like descriptions aren't getting saved.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
