Not understanding the basics

Please forgive a really dumb question, but maybe I've completely misunderstood the point of this component/plug-in...
I've successfully installed the component and the plugin in Joomla 1.7, created some subdirectories (in the back-end) and uploaded a PDF into one of them. Now I simply want to add a link to it at the foot of an article and I'm completely stumped. I've spent two hours in the documentation, forums and just prodding around and I just don't get it. Am I missing something really basic here?!
