Thumbnails size width / hight

Hi,
could be a silly question, blame me for that, but I have a little problem with the size definition generating my thumbnails.
The pictures, I want to show have following sizes:
Width 729 x Height 1100 (portrait format) and width 1100 x Height 729 (landscape format)

Now I'like to create thumbnails. For the size medium I want to create them in the size
width 124 x height 187 (portrait format) and width 187 x 124 (landscape format).

What are the correct sizes, when I want to create the thumbs for "medium image width" and "medium image hight" in the menu thumbnails ?
(width 124 x187 height or heigth 187 x widht 124)
Almost all pictures are in the portrait format (until now ...)

If they should not be cropped:
height=187
widht=187
