Revisionist history is the current trend. Things that were acceptable in the past are now being looked upon as abherant and unbelievable. 100 years from now, those folks will be looking at us the same way. And almost all my cousins in the south homeschool their kids now.
But the news media may be taking a small story or part of a story and blowing it out of proportion too. That happens far too often.
Makes me glad my kids are grown but makes me worry about the grandkids.

But these are the people voted to be on the state's BOE - and who then sit on the textbook committees.

Ok....Texas ladies....we need to go back to Texas Government Studies. The Lt. Governor holds more power in the state then Governor. As for Governor Perfect Hair and education, it was Ann Richards who first won the position as Governor on improving education. We were ranked 48th in the nation when she was elected. So everything that has been done since Governor Richards started this so called improvement in education can be blamed on both sides of the isle in our legislative branch. It's those crazy Lt. Governors since 1991 who have decided which educational bills have gone to the floor of the house and which have not. And one of those Lt. Governors was Perfect Hair man.
I'm a perfect example of just how bad our educational system is in our state. When I moved to Texas I was between my fourth and fifth grade year. I was bored to tears in math in fifth grade....and I love math. I was taking fourth grade math all over again. My friends in Delaware in 8th grade were taking Algebra I and I now was a year behind them. Maybe it just might be as simple to have the concept of inspiring our kids to take in more information and ask those questions of Why, Where, When and How!
As for textbooks, it's all apart of bloated government with both sides wanting control over minds. My daughter said to me today, 'We shove what we want kids to learn down their throat and tell them this is the way it is. We don't want them to be able to think critically for themselves.' I'm delighted she is working on a Masters in Agriculture Education. I see something very wrong with that picture of regurgitate what I told you. Fortuantely the school district I was enrolled in wanted children to be able to think and ask questions about the world around us. But then again a school district at least in our state mimicks what the local population wants. And growing up with NASA as the center piece of our world we had fathers who were engineers, doctors, and scientists. At that time mothers were mostly SAHM. That is where the emphasis in our education was directed. But now, just like the rest of our public schools it's mandated what they can and will teach in the same district I graduated from. I can not understand why teachers are not allowed to teach but have to teach 'how to take a test.'
I think Christi is right. At the same time I think God is sitting up there laughing at us to have a debate over creation vs. evolution. Does it "really" matter in the grand scheme of the earth and it's history from a science standpoint? Nope! Or does it really matter when what I think God wants me to do, which is to be a light unto him? Nope! I'm only here living on earth for a time period smaller then one can measure a piece of dust. So I find the whole argument totally unimportant.
