A friend of mine coined the name years ago and it stuck.

I use this screen name because I was told at a very young age I would never have children. We were lucky enough to adopt a little girl and 5 years later she made a request to Santa to have a baby brother and 3 months later I was pregnant with a baby boy! So I consider myself very lucky!

I think this is so fascinating! I would love to know what goes into all the names in your family or Native Americans for that matter.

Every tribe is different but for me, my mother's tribe (Schaghticoke) are matrilineal people. So, traditionally, the child is named by the maternal grandmother or family matriarch. My grandmother chose my name and the names of all my daughters. All my girls are named after women in my family.

My father's tribe (Hochunk or Winnebago) are patrilineal. Hochunk people receive their first name after they turn 1 year old at a big clan meeting. The same is for my grandfather's people (Akwesasne Mohawk). They have clan names that are designated to their clan and decided by the clan mothers. Only one person can have a name at a time and when that person passes, the name returns to the clan to be passed to a baby that is born to the clan after a mourning period. Typically 1 year.

My name Wunneanatsu means "one who is good & beautiful inside"

My daughters are:

Katherine Aquene (peacemaker)

Julia Nemenqua (butterfly)

Magwiska (tall woman) Alyse

Wunneonatsu Annalyce
