Re: pffftt what a crock
Welcome East of the Mississipi in the snow belt!  They are predicting a bad, snowy winter.  Ugh!  We have already used 3 of our grace days for the giant windstorm that took out our power in September.  Only 2 left.  We will be making up alot of days, I fear.

Seriously, Sus, I understand what you mean, but here in Ohio, students who leave school an hour early for a dr. appointment get counted absent.  It's because of the state requirements for attendance, so they have to draw the line somewhere.  If not, people would find all sorts of reasons not to attend, and want it to be considered present, which they aren't.  Our students can be up to 1/2 hour late and be considered tardy, and they can leave up to a 1/2 hour early for dr./dentist appointment and not be counted absent.  Basically, they have to attend part of every class.

Here I am with my post wishing for the days when schools cared more about kids than the dollar. When did they get so messed up? When did we start looking at kids as dollar signs instead of learning assets and humans?

So what happens if he doesn't attend? He's just a little guy, what would it hurt?

out school had a snow day today also... not sure exactly why since there really wasn't that much that came down.. I think it was more an excuse to extend the weekend for them.

I dont see the since in sending your child for an hour either.

When I was teaching school(decades ago:-) 10:00 was the magic number, if you were there at 10:00 you would get counted for the day and if not, you wouldn't.  Several times we came to school and then the weather started turning bad and they would do everything they could to still be there at 10.

Re: pffftt what a crock
That does suck!  I think it totally sucks that when the kids miss a hour or two for a dr or dentist appt...then they are counted absent for the whole day.  The problem comes in when your doctor (military) has the same holidays as the kids (federal holidays mostly), so we have to pull them out of school for their appointments.  Ugghhhhh! :?

Well said M'Lee, you'd think that the "children" would be the most important factor.  And really what can they accomplish in one hour at school, that is barely enough time to get settled down and then dimiss them to go get their coats, hats, mittens, and bags!  Good Gravy!!!!

I think it happened when states gave the right to the public to vote on whether they wanted to pay taxes to educate students.  You don't get to choose whether you want to pay for prisons, highways, etc.  Why should it be a choice for education?  Anyway, when they started funding schools by property tax and people had the right to vote against it, it became all about the money, since if you can't balance your budget, and meet all the federal and state requirements (and unfunded mandates) for education, you can't continue to operate the school.  Little towns like the one I teach in, can't afford to operate if they don't receive state funds for attendance, etc.  Soon, even larger schools are making rules to get those funds, too.
