just finished making all the little bags! Who of you do this? We open gifts on Christmas eve, so just before it gets dark all the kids throw reindeer food on our front lawn, a mixture of raw oats (for the reindeer's to eat while Santa has his milk and cookies) and glitter (so the reindeers know where we live ). Then we sit outside on the patio, have an early supper and all of a sudden there are bells and someone shouts LOOK, over there, did you see the sleigh? and all the kids scream with excitement. The kids run around to the front and there on the lawn is a pile of gifts! (it's summer here so no snow and really hot!!) It's so much fun and then before the kids go to bed they leave their stockings near the Christmas tree and Santa comes back while they are asleep (only if they have really been good) and fills their stockings . I love Christmas!!
we do the reindeer food. One year I forgot to sweep it up This year will be easy...lots of snow!
I love the idea of gifts on the lawn!! Heard about the reindeer food but haven't done it
What a wonderful story. My dd and Jonah make reindeer food on Christmas Eve.

I used to make it every year for the children in Emily's class. We always tell them the giltter is the "magic."
So, do you shovel it up to make it look like the reindeer ate it or do they not notice that?
we sweep ours away (or shovel if there is snow)...and then re-sprinkle glitter. It makes it look like the reindeer ate the oats, and left the glitter.
Gosh, never thought of sweeping it away, LOL!! It just seems to "fade" into the grass somehow, unless the reindeers have really been .
what a cute idea, I had not heard of it here but you know we Marylanders are weird...

That is a really neat tradition!
We make it--but I no longer put glitter in because wild animals will eat the oats and can be injured by it. Instead I buy edible cake decorating 'glitter' and put just a tad of that in there instead.
