I just got a Cuttlebug and a bunch of embossing folders.  I haven't used it yet, but have a fair idea on how to do so.  Here is my question.  I was on Pinterest checking out embossed cards, to get some ideas, I'm not real creative.  I notice that a lot of the cards are embossed, but the raised part is a different color than the background of the card.  How is this done?  I know if I was using Coredinations cardstock, I could lightly sand the top of the embossed parts to get a lighter color, but some of these cards are definitely colored.  Are they using chalk or Colorbox inks?  Holding it flat and lightly moving those over the surface?  I have no idea and I find those cards much prettier than just plain embossing.  I am not interested in buying markers etc., sprays etc., and starting down that road.  Any ideas?  Thank you.

I had to sit and scratch my head - I knew the answer but had to go to the file drawer in my head. lol

They are inking the embossing folder before they zip it thru, most likely.  I saw some "genius" at a crop do that and say "I'd have it all over me, the table, the layout, etc."  But that's what they are doing.  It works with any ink, but they usually use the pigment because it stays "wet" longer.

Coloring all those embossed images!?  WOW!!  That's patience to the extreme!!!  But the look is fantastic. 

I think she meant the embossed part was, for example, blue, and the paper background mint green.  Not that I'm that good at the embossing!!!

ive also seen ppl sand the raised part with lil sanding discs

You can apply ink (like you would use for stamping) to the raised image. You can just rub the ink pad over the image, but I get better results with a brayer (just roll on ink pad) or a Tim holtz foam applicator. I also find it easier to do with the paper still sitting in the folder. You can also apply ink to the embossing folder itself then run it through the machine.

I have only sanded my embossed paper using Coredinations cardstock. I did this with my daughter's graduation invitations. I liked the look. I want to try inking my embossing folders before running it through my Cuttlebug next. Good luck.

the embossed piece is separate from the card base.  you can layer that on top of the card base with dimensional adhesive.

You can ink your embossing folder.
