Doggie Rescue--Update
got tied up in a doggie rescue on the way home. I was driving down our street to go pay my water bill. There was a little yorkie on the side of the road (a small side street in rural out of the main street ) she was looking into a big ditch full of water. I'm thinking doggie suicide??? Anyways I drive down about a mile away pay the bill come back and it is still there on the end of my street. Well I couldn't just leave it. So I stop and it lets me pick it up. It was so matted I couldn't tell if it was a girl or boy...ya that bad and its spine and ribs right under my fingers.... oh man I was talking to it....and of course crying. I stopped and got hilary and we took it to the vet. It is a he. such a sweet disposition too. They had some flyers of missing pets, one was a yorkie so they called the guy, he came right over to see if it was his missing baby. It wasn't, but I said to him well do you want him? I can't keep him I have 3 goldens. He was like well I don't know.... I said here hold him, I know he is not your baby but he needs a home and you have love for him. When the man took him and held him I could see it, so he said I guess we will take him. YAY! Then of course I cried some more. The whole time hil saying OMG I can't believe you are crying....the vet techs saying there's no crying here....although they have seen me cry with my babies many times.... I can't help it. But I was SO happy!
The kicker..... a neighborhood dog Zeke a german shepard who belongs to the house kitty corner to mine, came up to the yard because I always give him treats. He was dragging his back leg and trying to walk. His hips are all off kilter. I think he probably got hit and his back leg joint etc is messed up.... I went running to the owners house, finally got someone to answer the door. I told her that I thought Zeke had gotten hit by a car he was dragging his back leg could barely walk by then he had caught up with me. She just said oh yeah he has been like that for awhile. I was like what did the vet say she says I am not working so I haven't taken him. I know the vets around here would work with you-- I had to do that when I first got Merlin... Then she says well he's dying ...and I am like then put him down he is is in pain and misery. She is like well he is going to be taken care of.... then he tries to sit down and really can't hardly do it... I just burst into tears and told her I can't take this and just left. It just kills me. people like that do not deserve to have animals. If you can't take care of them --- don't have them. my heart is breaking.
I think that Clint is right, i think Zeke has some hip displasia. I saw Zeke over the weekend. He DOES seem better, he is not dragging his leg and he was running across our field.

OMG! :( That poor German Shepherd! What a horrible HORRIBLE thing for someone to say - "well, he's dying".

And that poorl li'l Yorkie. Thank goodness you were there to rescue him!

I have to agree. If you can't take care of your animals, don't have them. Same with kids. If you can't take care of them, don't have them.

Re: Doggie Rescue
So nice of you to save that dog and so glad you helped him find a home. I just don't understand how some people treat their animals. I work with animal rescue groups locally, taking after my grandma and mom who also do it. I'd probably be in tears also, we rescued a small kitten by work last year and made sure to find it a good home.

Re: Doggie Rescue
A few months ago, my Jack Russell did not come home one night. The next morning we posted signs on the nearby streets. When I got home I walked the neighborhood calling his name, looking in ditches and crying his name some more. That afternoon, I called the SPCA in the next town....someone had turned in my dog. They found him on the side of the road and thought he looked lost. I picked up DD after school (11yo), it is her dog, and we rescued him from the SPCA. I am so glad someone turned him in. The phone number we had on his collar was an OLD number - not working.

Of course, I had to take pictures of Junior in the lock-up, one with his 'cell' mates and another in the car with DD looking real happy (both of them). One day I will scrapbook this.

Thank-you O/P for caring enough to go out of your way for the little dog.

That is really sad. It is like kids. If you can't afford to take care of them, then don't get pregnant.

Oh Susan, Your story brought tears to my eyes. I am so HAPPY you saved the little Yorkie. I would call animal control on your neighbor. How can someone let that poor dog suffer. I had a german Shepard for 14 years. She grew up with my daughters. I just couldn't imagine what that poor dog is going through.
Sometime I just don't understand why anyone has a pet if they can't take care of them.

I would like to call animal control however, we live outside the city limits and they have no jurisdiction.

So glad you were able to find a home for the little kitty! It is awesome that you work with a local rescue group. I tip my hat to you for that. I don't know if my heart could take that regularly it just kills me how some people just abandon or don't take care of their animals.

Oh Susan I am just in tears right now. How terrible of your neighbor to talk like that about her dog. It makes me so mad when people have animals but do not care for them properly. How would they like to be treated like that? I am so happy that you rescued the little yorkie and the man decided to take him. With a nice bath and grooming he is going to be beautiful.

Re: Doggie Rescue
I'd call the Humane Society - they'll fine her. Or the police. They may not have juristiction for the dog running loose, but animal cruelty is another story! If they can FINE them, they will!

My cats are INDOOR cats because I would not be able to rest my head on a pillow if one was not home when I shut the door for the night. I never did have a cat run the streets for that reason. Sorry kitties, but the best you get at my house is window screens when I'm sitting right by them so you can't knock them out - and soft beds, and catnip, gourmet food, treats, etc., and lots of love. Same for the pups! And I would have more, but I can't afford them the care they deserve. When you reach the point where you can't take them to the vet EVERY time they need to go - then you have too many. If that "count" is ONE, then that's too many for you. If you can afford to take good care of 12, then that's fine. I HATE ANIMAL COLLECTORS too. Those that want them but don't care for them after the novelty wears off, or who think they can save the world of animals themselves.

Re: Doggie Rescue
Oh Susan my heart is breaking over the story about Zeke the german shepherd. How can anyone be so cruel to an animal. My heart aches when Boomer has trouble getting up. I can't imagine someone having a dog suffer like Zeke is and not take him to a vet, and to not have any compassion for that poor baby. Why would anyone have a dog if they can't give it the love and care it deserves. (tears)

I am so happy for the little Yorkie! Thanks to you she has a new home. You are a real sweetheart!

One time before we had even Cider, my dd saw a dog running around in our backyard. We are fenced, but there was an open area the doggie got in. We went out to see if it had any tags, but he had no ID, just a rabies vaccination tag. I called the animal hospital that administered the rabies vaccine and asked them if they could track the owner by the number on the tag. They did, and when I spoke to the dog's owner she was estatic! The dog's name was Randy, and he had been missing quite a few days. AND he came from the next town over! Neither of us could believe how he got to our house from where he lives. Well, when she came to pick him up, she had her kids with her, and they all got out of the car and were crying "Randy" and hugged him and took him in the car. They thought they would never see him again. He was a pure bred Shitzu and she figured whoever found him would have just kept him. She couldn't thank me and my dd enough and a few days later she sent us a gift basket of goodies to show her gratitude. I can't tell you the feeling I got when they drove up in the car with tears of joy in their eyes. I still think of it to this day and I feel all emotional about it. So Susan, crying IS allowed!

Barb I just love that story!! It is something you never forget! That is so awesome! I do not know what I would do if I lost any of my babies! I have rabies tags and name tags with phone on it. I haven't had them microchipped but I am seriously thinking of it now.

Same with me. I don't have them microchipped either. But if they are every lost, all animal control or vet will do is scan them for a chip. If they find one, you will be notified immediately.

Re: Doggie Rescue
I am just an emotional rollercoaster right along with you reading this! You have such a kind heart and truly care about animals as much as I do! You have to be a voice for them and its so sick to think people just pass by and ignore the signs of an animal in distress! I am so glad you were able to save that yorkie and what a miracle to find him a home like that! I hope Zeke gets the care he needs and the owners get the karma they deserve for treating him like that. Have you called Animal Control/Police to report animal cruelty?? I imagine you have, but I am just flabbergasted that she has no sympathy either way about Zeke! He will definitely be in my thoughts!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!!!!
