We used to take driving vacations -- pick a spot, drive there and back, so that the drive was half the fun. So a lot of those states are ones we drove through on the way to somewhere else, but we typically can find some attraction to stop and visit as we drive through.
Then we bought a house, started a family, and have taken only driving vacation since then. The kids loved it, so we should do it again, but I have to admit it is more exhausting to drive around 5 people than with just 2!
