I am actually not much help here, though I know you will get your answer. I do remember I needed to shrink a picture, they were always too big. I went to snapfish.com to do that. Then it seemed to work. I know, not much help. Sorry

We've noticed avatars work best if they are uploaded to the ACOT Gallery.

Make sure your image is 100x192.

Click on the "gallery" link and "submit to gallery". Select "Photos" from the drop down box and add a title. Make sure you scroll down and check off the box that says you agree to the Terms of Use.

Open another tab and click on "my account", and on the left hand side, click on "Edit Bio". Go back to your uploaded photo and right click on it. You'll get a box of options - select "Copy Image Location" and paste it in the box that says "Avatar Image URL". Click on SUBMIT and you should be good to go!

I used this website, saved to my computer, uploaded to gallery and then copied the url into the space on your account.
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/ has to be less than 100 though or the website won't take the pic.

I have tried these things and it still won't work for me.
