I have noticed that on some shapes the cut start and end points are very slightly off so that when the design is finished, I have to take a box knife an manually 'finish' the cut. I suppose I will try and reset the machine again but should this really be necessary? These are 1" x 1" designs and the paper is definitely not moving so I can't imagine what is happening other than my nerve endings are getting a little frayed around the edges!

SNORT!!!!
Have you tried doing the same design at a larger size? Does it do the same thing? Have you tried doing the same design on a different mat?
Hmmm, these questions kind of sound familiar, huh?

Is this happening with all your cartridges or just one in particular?
The paper size must be at least 3x3 to work well in the cricut. With a design that tiny it could be shifting slightly.
Is the mat sticky enough?

I think her paper is full size, just the design she is cutting is 1x1 no? Maybe I am confused. Mine don't so this so I am not sure whats going on. Maybe it's the cartridge?

Here is a picture of my "hanging chad". Note the ever so exact cut at the top too.
Paper mat is 12x12, paper size is 8.5x11. setting size for this cut is 3x2.5. happens with most of my carts. only have one mat.
That is exasperating. I have found on smaller more intricute cuts I have trouble, but the design you are holding up is not what I would call intricate. It def does better on larger cut-outs. CALL CRICUT!
I will definitely do that. I'm sure they will tell me to take it back. However it was a Christmas present and I don't have the receipt!
My crircut is hit and miss. Most the time it works okay, buthe mats drive me crazy the paper varys so much I never know what kind of cut I'm gonna get. The mats drive me crazy when they start to get de-sticyfied!!! I went thru a whole package of red once trying to make large snowflakes for my window. I also experienced the opposite where everytime I finished a cut , and I try to remove it from a newwer mat the paper tore!! I really like my cricut and I try to overlook its imperfections (sometimes it takes a lot of patience) because I love what I can create with it. I also have the personal one and have experienced all the same imperfections. My advice is if your really not happy with it then call Cricut and try to get them to exchange it!! I hope you get one that will be better! Good Luck!

It didn't look like it in your pictures...but make sure there is nothing behind your cricut...cuz i have done that before and it will just skew a cut enough that it doesn't line up.
There are paper cutting guides (aboverubiesstudio.com) has one that is what i have that can help you with the miss cuts.
I just used a zig pen this week to re-stick my mats. i've only tried 2 cuts since then....it didn't work well enough to hold grunge board..but it seemed ok with regular card stock. (it took me 3 days or so to get them ready...wash one day and laid flat to dry, used the jumbo zig pen to load it down with glue and left it dry over night)

Can't help with that problem - I have it when I use Sure Cuts Alot and free SVG files.
For the mat sticky problem - I suggest buying Quilt Basting Spray - works great to re-sticky the mat! Also, when it starts to get used well wash in warm soapy (dishsoap) water and let air dry.
