did you hear about this? apparently there is a candidate forcing news stations to air ads that include extremely graphic content. and these ads are airing at prime times when children could very well be watching and see them.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/10/26/ ... l?hpt=Sbin
This just sickens me. I'm pro-choice, but I think this would bother me regardless. I think she has a right to be heard, to free speech and all, but apparently the only reason why these ads are airing is that there is a loophole - if a special interest group wanted to air these ads the stations could require them to be edited and not have the graphic images, or to air at times when kids were not watching, but because she is running for public office, they HAVE to air her ads and not edit them at all!
I just wanted to see what other people thought about this. I'm not trying to start an abortion debate. I just want to talk about the graphic nature of these ads being shown when kids could see them.

ok, I can't find a video of the ad. You HAVE to know it's bad when You tube won't show it!! So, I commented on an article about it.......... below is my comment.
You are DISGUSTING Missy Whatsyourname!! So, you have to get the message across WHILE MY CHILD WATCHES TV. You sick, dimented woman! YOU ARE A WRETCH FOR THINKING THIS IS A WAY TO GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS! You will LOSE (no doubt) and you will not have another shot at office. YOU ARE A JOKE YOU SICK-O!
I think it pretty much sums up how I feel about it/her and her message.

I have not seen it. And if and when I do, I will be complaining to someone. Especially if it is while I am watching tv in the evening and my children are in the room. I am two miles from DC and all of my local channels air ads for DC, MD, VA. or the DMV as some are now calling it.

I think it is good, should spark discussion opportunity with parents and kids and make them aware of what is going on. People need to see these things to make it real for them, and I think even kids are influenced at a young age and should know all sides.

I also want to ask, is it really any more graffic than most things kids see? The Meth ads on TV, the smoking ads on TV? The x box games that have violence and blood and death, the movies, the tv shows, kids see more than you realize of violance and graffic images, I think that the objection is that people are faced with the truth and the truth makes them uncomfortable, and thats the issue. Many people DONT want the truth!

Since I havent seen the ad I can't really say, but I imagine the answer is yes, since YouTube pulled it. Also, it is running at time when small children could be seeing it. Personally, I think my 5 year old shouldn't have to know ANYTHING about the abortion debate yet. It's not that I dont want her knowing both sides. She doesnt even really know where babies come from, how could a child that age possibly comprehend anything about this issue.
And I think that is the crux of the problem - the graphic violence that kids are seeing and blood and death - that is an issue with older kids. at the preschool kindergarten level it is all about managing their exposure to those things and trying to keep it away. But these ads could pop up anywhere!

this is funny to me - in an irony way for both of us, totally NOT in an 'I am laughing at you way'. Just want to say that since sometimes things get misunderstood with online communication. I say the same thing when I see the protesters at the planned parenthood ( that happens to be next door to my work ) bringing their kids with them. I think to myself, boy is that a shame! those kids didnt have a chance to make up their own minds, they were just brainwashed by their parents, and paraded out there to make a political statement that is WAY beyond their conscious will.

I know, let's show slaughter houses on television commercials. All of that graphic detail ought to make everyone feel really good about eating a hamburger, bacon, or chicken leg.

I understand Rachel's point. As I am one who helps to feed my nation and the world. The difference is YouTube would pull the above ad, but let abuse of animals by mentally deranged individuals and slaughter house videos stand. Those are put up by Animal Rights groups who think they know more about raising your food then I do or any other Agriculture Animal Producer. Are there bad apples in farming, sure. But there are bad Doctors, too! I hate animal abuse in all forms. That includes those commercials from those national groups who then turn around and spend the money on lobbying rather then funneling the money to local shelters and rescues. Just ask the Missouri folks about Prop B. The majority of veterinarian's are against it. But this isn't about animal abuse or animal rights argument. It's about what has happened to plane ole common decency. By the way I'm watching "Bonaza!"
In fact I was going to make the same correlation as Rachel.
I also agree with every other post. What I do know is I have the ability to "TURN THE TV OFF! or TURN THE CHANNEL!"

My question then is, should we not "brainwash" our kids when we tell them shooting someone is wrong, or stealing is wrong? EVERY parent teaches their kids according to their morals and belief system. I stand by all I have said, but hope I have been able to come across graciously, as it is hard to do in issues like this.

you totally came across graciously. I just think it is interesting how people see things differently. and as I said I didnt' want to start a debate about the issue, I will just respectfully agree to disagree.
back to the original question about the ads though, that is a case of not every parent teaching their kids their own beliefs, but one person (or small group) more or less 'forcing' others' kids to watch footage that they know full well will be deemed objectionable by, I daresay, the majority of people. Im not saying that the majority are for or against the issue, but it is my hypothesis that the majority of parents on both sides of this issue wouldnt want their kids to see that type of graphic content.
yes we could turn off the tv, but it isnt a regularly scheduled program, it could pop up anywhere. So, I guess a parent's choice is to turn off the tv altogether or take their chances that they can get to it and turn it off before the kid notices - which almost certainly would'nt happen the first time since they wouldnt know what to look for.

My problem with the change the channel idea- which I agree if I don't like something I don't watch it. BUT often times in my house, I have no idea where the remote is. Especially if we are upstairs watching tv. And at the same time I am often ironing or doing some such thing with laundry and so the tv is on the other side of the room.
My kids are 2 and 4, they shouldn't have to watch anything graphic and things shouldn't be shown at times when kids are possibly watching tv. Heck, my husband and argue over whether they should even be able to watch regular tv news. But that is a different subject.
And like you, I don't particularly care where anyone stands on any issues, be it abortion, war or animal abuse. I just don't need things shoved down my throat in this manner. I hate the political season and all the dang commercials. But this one sounds a bit OTT.

Not appropriate and I for one do not know any ones mind who was changed by watching one of these ad's! Ialso don't think that I should be having a conversation with my 7 year old trying to explain these ads - I think they are just put out there to bring more division to the campaign! So sad!

Meg, we seem to have very different beliefs, but on this topic I completely agree with you! This is not cool. This woman should be ashamed of herself. I also totally agree that no matter whose child it is and what the parents beliefs are, no child should see that stuff on a commercial, in a movie, in a video game, or elsewhere. There are ratings for a reason. Keep children innocent until they are old enough to comprehend the ins and out of life.

I am pro-life and I totally disagree with these ads. Even though I haven't seen the commercials, anything that is that graphic has no business being shown where children can see it. We have a church in town here that put on a haunted house a couple years back, only the scary stuff was actually very graphic re-enactments of abortions. They didn't let parents know that before they took their kids through the haunted house that was billed as family friendly. Lots of very unhappy people there! Lets keep our kids innocent as long as possible!
