I also don't care for having the product preview in the layout gallery. But, as a designer, I would LOVE to have additional product previews available in the store. There is no way for us to showcase the close-up detail views aside from posting a message in the forum or posting them in the gallery.

Marci that makes total sense now that you've explained about the previews; I completely understand! My opinion is do what you need to do, we can just skip over them.
