Today is Earth Day. I think that the idea of Earth Day is a great one - dedicating one day to take the time to really learn about the Earth, how to take better care of the Earth and how to preserve it.
When I logged onto my computer this morning I was bombarded with different headlines about Earth Day. "Freebies For Earth Day", "Discounts For Earth Day", etc. I have a big problem with this. There are some people and companies that are turning this day into a commercial holiday. A store is having a sale on outdoor furniture because it's Earth Day. Babies R Us is giving a 20% discount on everything you can fit into one of their reusable bags. Resataunts are giving away free organic shakes and natural whatever for Earth Day. Sure, they're not charging you, but the way I see it, it's just another promotional stunt to try and get you BACK to the establishment after Earth Day. Oh, and my favorite - there is a list of websites that you can go to and PRINT coupons to take to various stores and restaraunts to receive "freebies" or "discounts". Seriously? On EARTH DAY they are encouraging thousands and thousands of people to PRINT coupons to take to the establishment to get a freebie so that the establishment can then cause more paper to be tossed out - whether it's recycled or not. Seems moronic to me.
My kids and I are going to tackle our Earth Day study unit for the day. Then we are going to clean up the yard, clean the bird baths, and plant two little starter trees that were given away FREE at our local hardware store WITHOUT a coupon.
Rant over. Thanks for letting me complain.
OCD is not an adjective. It is not a personality quirk. It is not synonymous with being organized. It is a complex and debilitating mental health illness that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and is defined by the presence of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. I am an OCD warrior and I fight for my son.
OMGosh - I ranted about exactly the same thing to ds this morning. Is nothing sacred any more? Every single celebration or memorial has been turned into yet another ploy for businesses to make money. I like a good sale as much as the next person but, seriously, this day is about conserving not consumerism, not waste and certainly not about printing coupons or more and more paper going out into the world. (sigh)
Quite frankly I'm surprised they don't have a save $9.11 sale on September 11th and while they don't now because it's still too fresh and painful - I bet they do someday.

I agree, some businesses might genuinely want to honor the day, but most it seems are simply out for the advertising...
everyone wants to be like Kohls
I agree, it's too much. We don't need a sale for every special day. Lower your prices and you might get more business. This new idea for how business should operate is misguided. Maybe it works, but it's annoying.

Laura, I think what you have planned to celebrate Earth Day sounds just perfect!
Sigh, it's the same with every holiday sadly. I try and ignore what other people people do, and just focus on me and mine though. And to be honest I sort of liked that ACOT has a prima sale.
Find my books here. See the mom (crafting, cooking, organizing, and homeschooling) side of me here. {Under construction}

True, but ACOT is also giving away seed paper - an earth-purposed product.

That they are shipping in a big ol' cardboard box. Your statement is a bit contradictory in that you complained about printing coupons for freebies when ACOT is shipping the freebie in a box...after they cash in on the Earth Day craze too.
Edited to say: I am by NO MEANS anti-ACOT. I love this site, the galleries, and the store (too much somtimes!! LOL!!).

there are several benefits to purchasing and shopping on-line
1. the stores don't send out paper fliers. The fliers are electronic and you can say no thanks without creating any waste
2. the coupons used are codes so you don't have to print your own for that either
3. you eliminate the need to drive to the store and for the goods to be delivered to stores all across the country. one place that everything is sent
4. the mail is gonna come anyway.
5. if the supplies come in a cardboard box, the box can be reused.
6. no plastic bags like many stores where we shop.
on-line stores can run specials anytime they want if you ask me. the bigger problem is the brick and mortar chain stores that feel the need to have a sale lately for anything and everything. It really makes me wonder about what kind of mark-up they are having on the product when you are constantly seeing 60% off sales and coupons for an extra 10-20% off.

I can see how that would look contradictory, and I'll concede it may be, but I don't think so. Here is why. Yes, they are having a sale, but their freebie doesn't generate anything extra - paper, cardboard, etc. The order is going out anyway. The way I see it, ACOT, while having a sale on Earth Day, is more in the spirit of the day. Now, I would agree that it would be contradictory if say a digi scrapper placed an order and then ACOT had to ship the seed paper in a box on it's own - that would be contradictory in my opinion.
Oh, and I agree with happayscrappay - shopping on line, in general - not just on Earth Day, is more economical and earth friendly all the way around.

I understand completely how you feel. I've learned to tune it out, the clutter of life which bombards us.
I just think it is a day I can share with others what I do every day which is Earth Day at the ranch.

Very good points. And I didn't look at that way. Thanks for the different perspective. As far as my personal preferences, I think I shop equally online and brick and mortar shops.

I agree about Earth Day - but I placed my ACOT order today because it had many Prima flowers in it and the 30% off is absolutely wonderful!
I wonder, sometimes, if we ever give God a headache.
My earth day rant is. I look out side my window and see a guy fling a cigaret out his window in front of my house. Sure wish it was a neighbor > I would have followed him home and presented him with his but LOL but I would have done it:-D

we've had a series of grass fires in the area due to cigarettes - with the winds we've been having it's really really bad. Luckily the farmers have been working field edges or you'd have entire fields of stalks buning.
