I just got back from my national civic sorority's National Convention. Phi Beta Psi's main purpose is to promote friendships and raise money for cancer research. We do all sorts of fundraisers throughout the year, and then at the convention each year we vote to give our money raised to doctors chosen by our advisory council that are making strides in cancer research. Since 1941, our sorority has given over 8 million dollars to cancer research, directly to doctors, in the form of research grants. It is only a sorority because it is all women (for those who have a negative connotation of the word). These women are some of the sweetest, most wonderful women I have ever met. I have 40 local friends and hundreds, nationwide, after meeting them at conventions. We are united by our wish to see an end to this dreaded disease. Other than that, we are a wide variety of ages (20 to 90!) and a wide variety of lifestyles and professions.
Have you ever belonged or do you belong now to a special group? What is your purpose? Do you meet regularly? What got you started? (Our sorority is trying to grow as our members get older and pass on, we are dwindling and finding it hard to attract younger members.) If you have never been in such a group, are you interested? I would love to tell you about how you can become a member of Phi Beta Psi!
Laura, that sounds like a wonderful group!!
I can't say that I belong to anything, really... Just joined Blackbird's Micro Midget Racing club with dh for the season. All it really does is give us a discounted
rate at the track each week for pit spots and we can go to and speak at the monthly meetings. We joined b/c dh can run for a seat next year and overall, its a bit cheaper throughout the season.

I don't belong to any groups that do fundraisers or anything. But my local scrappy friends get together the last Sunday in a month to discuss a book and/or watch the movie (Book club). We also get together quarterly to scrap

That's amazing Laura! Sending nothing but healing through tjones! Please keep us posted!
I'm really not apart of a group per say but I am always helping any local charity I can. I really try to help individuals that are needing help...like Team Jay, Team Rori that are fighting childhood cancer. I raise money and donate what I can to help the families directly vs giving to one huge organization. That way I know directly where it is going.
I feel the biggest group I'm apart of is probably right here at ACOT!

When I worked for the VA, I was a member of Federally Employed Women. The group was founded to support women working in government and address issues with women's rights. Now it also encompasses not only the rights of women working in federal government, but all federal workers. We did fundraising that went back to the community (we started a book scholarship for any first time college student to buy their books for the first year they were in school to promote higher education) and also for our chapter to go to national training programs to take classes to help advance their careers in the federal government. When I got to go 3 years ago, I got to take the first 2 levels of Lean Six Sigma as well as a couple other leadership training classes.
We met monthly, and held membership drives (which we made as potlucks and had women with home-based businesses as vendors to promote women in business) 3-4 times a year. I actually got started in FEW when my mentor invited me to a meeting. I liked the group and the meaning of FEW, so I joined. Then, I got nominated for secretary (right before our chapter had to put on our region's training program...) and was an officer up until I left the VA last May.

I "belong" to an on line group who post morning and evening. These women are a great support group and my mornings are not the same without a check in.
I am a member of a group of creative women locally. We call ourselves The Women Who Do Lunch bunch but have been known to play with paper and glue from time to time. I am also in two book clubs here in town.
I was on the library board here in town for almost 3 years but when our kids asked us to increase our before and after school care of our granddaughter from 2 to 4 days a week, I resigned. This has ended as all 3 Grands will now go to school with their mom where she teaches. Thinking maybe about doing some volunteer work at the Chamber of Commerce. Going to wait til after my hubby recovers from his upcoming back surgery before I decide.

I used to be indecisive; now I'm not sure.
