Message in a BouquetThis Saturday is Valentine’s Day. Although a Christian bishop named Valentine was martyred on February 14 in A.D. 271, there is nothing in this legend to account for the custom of choosing a sweetheart on this day.

By the early 1600s, it was a popular custom to send handmade valentines (gifts or greetings) to your sweetheart; about 1800, the first commercial cards appeared. Cards were usually sent anonymously. As early as 1822, an English official reported having to hire extra postal workers on this day.

How do you show your love? This month, send your sweetheart a symbol of your affection by putting something special in a bouquet. For example, if you want to show your loved one how strong your love is, give him or her an oak tree. (OK, perhaps an oak leaf or two would do.) Want to flatter your honey? Hand him or her some fennel. To prove that your love is forever, surprise your valentine with red salvia. As for here we go to dinner.  As a kid, I always loved leaving Valentines on the door step and ringing the bell and running. Do they still do that?

Everything in school is different.  Everyone has to be treated the same, so it doesn't have the meaning it used to.  The kids buy valentines  and write the names of everyone in the class and then fill in the from.  Luckily my 2 granddaughters enjoyed making their own with me so we had a lot of fun making goodies and pretty packages for them.  If we made something with animals tags say, they'd decide who should get a dog or a whale or whatever else they had a choice of.   When I was a kid, each room had a box and you put your valentines in the boxes in the rooms you were giving someone a card.  Then they were distributed. 

I do understand how a child with no valentine might feel and can see the reason why it has become this way.  Don't remember anyone getting upset so I think the teachers must have given some to the kids they thought might be left out.

My fav thing about Valentine's Day is the story about the saint that married couples against the Emperor's commands.  I like that he believed strongly enough to stand up for his beliefs.

Well, those ideas are interesting but the only way to my hubby's heart is through his stomach, LOL! He's diabetic now though but a good meal he'll welcome.
