Hurricane Sandy
Did they HAVE to name it after me?

So - I hope all in the path of this monster stay safe, warm and dry. I'll be watching from CT, cozy, with my Chihuahua and a blanket, and a hot cup of tea.

LOL, Leslie...too funny!

I too wish everyone in it's path to stay safe, warm and dry. I've endured hurricanes but not those winter storms and don't ever want to.

Ya'll in the path please stay safe. It will be interesting to see if a hybrid storm develops from the two systems.

I really hope they decide to close our store so I don't have to risk my life driving to work. Unfortunately as a manager I don't have the option of calling out..

I'm watching the Weather Channel - and it looks now like it will hit your area. I think they'll close down!

I hope so, most retailers seem to care about missing sales instead of employee safety. As for now we have to open in the morning and may close early. The problem with that is by the time we leave it's bad out.

Here in MA we are prepared. We bought a generator after the 2 huge storms last year. We lost all our bushes & shrubs and a tree fell down just missing our house. We lost power for a week last year too. We have everything we need and I'm just doing all the laundry.

I work in a hospital....we never close of course. 2 winters ago we had a bad storm hit while I was at work. The ER was pretty much empty all night...even our regulars weren't coming in. By morning of course all the schools were closed, businesses were closed. Our day staff was calling that some wouldn't make it, some were going to be late, but a good majority made it in to work. One guy in radiology actuallly came in by snowmobile....about 10 miles worth! Well, the administration decided they weren't going to let any staff leave because "it was dangerous to be out." I was livid! I lived 5 miles from the hospital, had a vehicle that was good in snow, and main roads which I knew wouldn't be that bad all the way home. My argument was....if they were so worried about staff being out in the storm, why did they let the day staff come in? I was so angry...I had 4 kids at home alone at that point...over night was fine, but an extended period of time alone did not make me happy. I eventually (about 9am) successfully argued with the Chief Operating Officer that relief was there (all our day staff had made it in) and there was NO reason to force me to stay...I had obligation elsewhere. So I left...and the hardest part of getting home was getting my car out of its parking spot in the hospital parking lot! Other staff that stayed had to catch some sleep on stretchers in the recovery room, and eventually were released about 28 hours after their shifts had begun. Granted...they paid overtime for all of that, but I would have been a very unhappy person if I hadn't gotten out of there!

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I admire all the nurses, dr's, police, firefighters, emt's who have to work and have jobs that never close. I just think retail stores should close because by staying open people risk their lives going out to shop and the employees who have to get to work. While I'm in agreement with my employees who won't show up tomorrow I don't have that option. I love my job, but with mandatory evacuations in areas I will have to pass to drive to work I'm a little worried about getting there and home. They already called state of emergencies here, the mall located across from my store is closed as well as many other businesses.

I agree whole heartedly with you! I think it is irresponsible for retail owners to put their employees and customers at risk, as you probably would lose money on a day like that anyway! I wouldn't be going shopping in a hurricane!

Re: Hurricane Sandy
its not YOU Sandy, this hurricane was named for my mother! she thought she was slick though and changed the spelling of her name (Sandi), but she is still a force to be reconded with, lol!!!

all of the schools, around here closed for the next two days, even the colleges and even my police dept has told all of us office staff to stay home (this never happenens) - and the storm has not really started yet! but is is coming directly through here if it stays on its course
