1st cake in years
My ds#2 just gave me a Kitchen Aid mixer! (for Christmas 2011, but just delivered this past weekend) So, I made the first cake I have made in years. It is a Duncan Heinz butter yellow cake. Two boxes because we are having a party for my ds#1 tonight. And I am so excited! When was the last time you made a cake? What kind? Was it a box cake or a scratch cake or some other kind of cake?

I make packaged cake mixes all the time. Spice cake w/ cream cheese frosting is great. Duncan Hines mixes are just fine for me. I either do a bundt cake pan or cupcakes. I love my Kitchen Aid, too. Have fun!

Thanks, Lynda. I have had hand mixers in the past but the last one broke years ago. I wish I knew how to make icing.

What a great gift! I just made Duncan Hines Red Velvet Box Cake mix yesterday... but I made it into cupcakes and not a cake, does that count?! Lol.

I made Bob's birthday cake yesterday....a banana supreme from a mix. But I made banana icing from scratch. 8 oz cream cheese, butter, 2 smashed bananas, vanilla and powdered sugar. And he wanted a layer cake so I made it that way. It was yummy!

Re: 1st cake in years
I bake frequently. It's been a few months since I made one. My DH made an Angel Food cake a few weeks ago. It was delicious and from a box mix. I do both from scratch and mix, depending on the flavor. DH has a really good recipe for icing that he does... heavy whipping cream, cream cheese and powdered sugar. I make a mocha icing from scratch but haven't done it in quite awhile. I also have a good butter cream recipe that one of my best friends gave to me. She makes THE BEST cakes and icing. Sadly she lives in New Mexico so it's been years since I've tasted any of her creations. However, she does send me cookies periodically. :)

One of my favorite cakes is a fuzzy navel cake...it's so yummy!

It's been ages since I've baked a cake; I baked Gluten free brownies from a mix just the other day and I bake almond-flour muffins quite frequently. I used to bake cakes for family baby showers and things and made homemade buttercream frosting but the cakes were frox a mix.

Bowl Full of Cherries

Re: 1st cake in years
I don't bake cakes that often. DH is the one who loves to bake. Dd gave him a mixer for Christmas 2010. I forget what kind it is, but it has the rotating plate that the bowl sits on and turns. He makes cakes all of the time from a box. He cheats and uses a can of frosting. Doesn't matter, they are always good. It sounds like you got a very nice present. Enjoy.

I baked a cake for my friends BD a few weeks ago. Bibi, if you want some icing recipes, let me know. I have 2 I use often, one is light and fluffy, not so sweet, the other good for decorating.

Now that the kids are grown and out of the house, I rarely bake but I did bake a cake for my dh's birthday in Dec. From a mix but was quite good. German chocolate and a premade icing. I used to do my icings from scratch, buttercream and chocolate. Enjoy your mixer. My dd just borrowed my hand mixer now I'm mixerless but I know where I can come get dessert now ;)

Congratulations on your mixer, Bibi! Dh gave me a new KitchenAid mixer for Christmas - and it has made baking so much easier for me. I made a white cake yesterday for Valentine's Day. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine!

I baked Two cakes tonight. They are both ordered for a party Saturday
It is a traditional Norwegian cake "Kransekake'' made from almonds,
I will assemble them Saturday, when they are done they look like this one that I made for HRM crownpricess Mette Marit's visit to Florida

About a week ago. I have a recipe that makes one layer 8x8 square cake. It is a basic recipe and then you add whatever flavor your want like lemon peel and lemon extract or cocoa or cinnamon/cloves/nutmeg or just leave it a plain yellow layer cake. My DH and I are fond of these little one layer cakes and I make them often.
