UPDATE: The bag worked great. When we traveled, I put the insert in, and when we were just going around town, I took the insert out and had my camera and small purse for my cc's and cash in it. Since I had reinforced the side of the bag, it worked well, even with the insert. But I liked the additional padding for the airplane.
So, I've been coveting those handbag camera bags for a while now, but I am not willing to spend that much money on one, since I want my money to go to either camera gear or scrappy supplies, not handbags. Then I started seeing these 'make a purse into a camera bag' tutorials, but always thought "that is the ugliest bag in the world, why did they use that one?". Well, we are going on a trip on a plane, and so I needed a bag that would hold my camera and gear that I could also put my wallet and stuff in, and this is what I came up with.
It's from Target.

I like it cause it has handles and a strap. (I also added that large leather piece to the strap to keep it from cutting into my neck) It's a really soft leather, so I needed to re-enforce it a little. Well, I saw on one of the tutorials to use needlepoint plastic, so I got 2 of those and cut it to fit on the bottom and go up the end sides. After opening the seam on the bottom of the purse, I just slipped them in and stitched the seam back up.

Then I made the padded insert and stole the partition from my "real" camera bag, and attached it with velcro.

I think it's going to be a hit. It has lots of pockets and zippers, so everything is secure. What do you think?
