So angry...

....I just read the article about Target, the war hero dog.. She was ACCIDENTALLY euthanized!!!! WTH!? I swear sometimes I think this world would be better without people!!!!
She had escaped from her yard on Friday. This dog that had survived soo much in Afghanistan....she saved several soldiers. Her owner saw her picture late Friday nite..WHen he went Monday to pick her up---he discovered she had been put down...someone had taken the wrong dog out of its cage...
I just can't even believe how angry and sad I am right now. I guess it is because I HAD to put a pet to sleep--a sick, dying pet---and it shattered my heart. I can't even imagine discovering that a healthy pet had been put down.
The owner's 4 yo son keeps asking him to take the poison out of Target and bring her back home......

Was that the dog that was on Oprah w/the soldier???? Either way, human incompetence is amazing. Don't they triple check before they put a dog to sleep? That poor little boy - how can you ever trust the Humane Society again?
Ugh - it's just sickening!

How sad...how can someone take the wrong dog out of the cage? You would think they would be more careful and have a check list or something before doing something so final. That poor family.

This makes me angry, yet at the same time it doesn't surprise me. Why, because I've done my homework on the whole Animal Welfare/Animal Rights thing.
Janny mentioned it was the Humane Society. I'm not going to take the time to research which one it was. This was a local shelter who housed Target. This shelter with Humane Society in it's name is not affiliated with Humane Society of the United States. Humane Society of the United States is not affiliated with any local shelter containing the name Humane Society or is it the parent of any Humane Society. This act was done by the local shelter. And the closest Humane Society to me may be an exceptional shelter. The truth is probably closer to this hypothetical scenario: Upon Target's arrival it was determined because Target's age probably wouldn't be adopted quickly and was slated to be euthanized. I've read until I'm sick of reading about family pets who are picked up and are put down just because they escaped the house or yard. And I'm sick of the justification. All I can tell you if you donate money to a national organization, stop. Most are Animal Rights groups and actively promote euthanizing pets. And one of them does so at their national headquarters to the tune of 97% of pets who are left with them. National organizations use your money to lobby and do not help in a significant amounts to even hit a small percentage of hands on pet care. Give to your local shelter or rescue group as they do the hands on work. Do your research before forking over your dollars. Your even better off then giving money to get a shelter's wish list and purchasing the items to give to the shelter and get a receipt for your taxes.
I urge you to read
Nathan J Winograd's blog who works for a "No Kill Nation." He shows where it works.
What just makes me ill is this was a pet who was rescued in a foreign country by an American Hero. Target was beyond just being special, he was helping this family with all of the things that come along with a Hero coming home. On top of that why does a young boy have to learn at such an early age there are people out there who do not care about you. Anger doesn't even describe my feelings, FURIOUS does!

OMG how sad!
How do you accidentally euthanize the wrong dog??? How careless can you be??? My heart goes out to the family, especially the 4 year old son.

having just lost my dog, I totally understand the pain they are going through---but how this happened to them, just makes me sad and bewildered. The little boys response put a huge pang in my stomach.

this is so sad! I know it's hard to lose an animal friend but to have such a serious mistake is just disturbing!! I agree with some of the other post that ask why didn't the double check! that is such a serious thing and It breaks my heart
Mistakes that take a life are all heartbreaking!

My husband and I were in the car when we heard this. It broke our hearts. Brought it close to home for him because he's been over to the middle east three times in the past five years. I saw her on the Oprah show and it brought a smile to my face seeing both her and the owner together. The hardship they had to endure and the joyous occasion when they were finally reunited. Made me feel like there was hope in the world
To have it all end with the incompetence that the person had by euthanizing the wrong dog. Don't they double, triple check things before they do anything? Also, if Target was caught Friday and their closed on the weekends, why Monday?? Stupid, stupid, stupid. It makes me so angry.
