Camera search
My sweet dh is getting me a new camera for Christmas. No, he does not know about it yet, but just as soon as I know which one, then I can tell him which one, and where to get it. Maybe. That is the problem. Do any of you know of a web site I can go to to compare cameras? I do not want a site that sells them, because I do not want to be persuaed into buying one of their cameras. I do not even know what kind of camera I need. I have had a Kodak point and shoot that I liked, but it is only three years old and has always had problems. Now, I have lost the power cord (again) and can't even recharge it. LOL. So, I want a new one. What do I need to look for? What features do I need? I know next to nothing about taking pictures, but am willing to learn. Just since July I have been trying to use some of the more intricate features of my camera--even took a Momtography classs. I am such a namby-pamby and can't make up my mind! Fear is ruling; I am afraid to get more complicated because I might not make use of it.

Re: Camera search
if you google "camera reviews" you get lots of sites with info on cameras - some consumer and some expert advice, opinions on cameras and also technical info

Re: Camera search
definitely go Canon! but Amazon.com has tons of cameras and gives great reviews; I buy lots of stuff there (including my Canon printer and camera) - and they have darn good prices - it looks as if they 'favor' Canon too :winkb:

do you want point and shoot or do you want dslr? That's the first big question you have to ask yourself.

Re: Camera search
I like the reviews at Steve's Digicams. Another good review site is dpreview, but I've always ended up using Steve's when I'm making decisions.

I'm a Nikon girl, and I am also a member of nikonians.org and there are are some good reviews on Nikon equipment and other photography resources.

I'm not sure where to go for a side by side comparison; I usually go to the store, see which cameras I like, and then go back home and read reviews.

I want to add that it is very important that you handle the camera you are condsidering -- it may have great specs, but if it doesn't feel right in your hand, then you will never be comfortable using it.

I'd also consult Consumer Reports. I have a Kodak and hate it! Never again will I buy a Kodak. :x

Re: Camera search
I have a Sony P&S and a Nikon dslr, and for me there are no question, my dslr ROCKS! I just dropped it down a stair and I was really lucky only the lens broke, and instead of having to get a whole new camera I only need to get a new lens. Beside that I have much more control with what I am shooting and what I artistically wanna show with the dslr than with the P&S.

You might also wanna look here, I think this is a great site for looking at cameras

Good luck with your choice

Re: Camera search
i second the AMAZON.com for the choices they have and customer reviews,
not to mention really good deals (most are free shipping and remember NO
taxes!) and i also second (third? :)) the CANON point & shoot suggestion...
a lot of these has the extra fun share feature for facebook, youtube, etc.
unless you're looking for a DSLR, then i highly recommend NIKON D-series!

Re: Camera search
OK. All of you gave really good advice, especially about going to several different sites to compare. And I like the idea of holing a camera to see if it "fits" me. I am still having a hard time trying to decide if I should go with a P&S or step up some . But I will. I want to be able to buy a new camera on Black Friday to get a better deal. Thanks, Friends.

These are the 2 sites I would recommend. I love Steve. :) He seems to know his stuff. Regarding P&S vs DSLR, if you don't mind the bigger price tag, I'd go DSLR. I've got both and I rarely use the p&s. It hangs out in my purse for "emergency" situations when I don't have my big camera.

Re: Camera search
I agree, google all the reviews but one of my favorite for any tech stuff is CNet. The have reviews from experts and users and video reviews too. It helps narrow it down to what you're really looking for.

I love my D60 too...but I also have 2 different point and shoots that I love. I have a Fuji from 3 years ago that still works awesome, that I keep in my purse forwhen I don't want to carry the dSLR. I also have an Olympus waterproof camera for water shots. I love them all, and would hate to be limited to just 1 anymore. I am definitely spoiled.
