general craft help needed!

Wow I haven't been here in a long long time, but i have a crafty question and I immediately thought of this message board! I am making a shield for my ds's Link costume and need some advice. My father cut the shield shape out of a very thin particle board. ( not my first choice!) I have decided to give it some thickness by gluing foam board to the front and covering it in paper mache. My question to ya'll is any ideas on the best way to do this. The old glue and water route or is there a product out now that's better? I had originally planned for the thing to be from inch thick ply wood and the flat thin shield as it is now won't stand up to my sons abuse!
Thank you for any and all advise that you might have!

hmmm, can Dad cut another shield? Then glue two of them together? Paper Mache seems like it would be very messy, and would run. I'll have to think about this one some more.
