I found this article on Yahoo! and I think it's so interesting, and really true, but I think they could've continued the list forever!
They definitely should've included portable house phones (I swear the batteries die in 6 months, and they cost like $20 so for that you may as well just buy a whole new phone!) and point and shoot cameras (or maybe my perception of this one is off because I want a new one. :P)
Any others?
Anything that IS actually built to last?
When we bought our new refrigerator the guy at the store said they are built to last 7 years only. If it last longer, you are lucky.

A little off topic but for portable house phones I recommend Panasonic. Seriously, we've tried almost every brand of phone and the only ones that ever worked well AND lasted were Panasonic. We had our first Panasonic for at least 5 years when we decided we really needed one of the phones with multiple handsets (we still kept that Panasonic and only got rid of it a few years ago). We tried Uniden, Motorola, etc. and returned them all before going back to Panasonic - we had our first set for 10 years before we started to notice battery problems and bought a new set when we moved into our new apt in 2008 and it's still going strong.
There is an unwritten rule: If it's something you absolutely hate and can't stand to look at it another day, it will last for years and years. I had this old Kenmore fridge. It was avocado green and OMG after 20 years it was still going. I hated it. Dh finally let me get a new fridge, but guess what. The old avocado one is still running so I hear. A guy wanted one to put in his shop and we gave it to him. Last I heard, it was still going strong.

Hahaha, we had a fridge like that too, except it was pee greenish/yellow (YUCK!) and there was also a car we had when I was little, it was an old old old Pontiac and the floor was practically rusted out, I HATED having to ride in that thing (especially if anyone I knew might see me!!) and it just refused to die... I think my father hit two deer with it in one night and that finally did 'er in... but some guy did actually buy it to get it running and use it for demolition derbies...:P

Ooh... that's good to know... I think that hot water heaters are like 10 years... which really sucks, because they're not cheap.
And things will always decide to either act up or die at the most inconvenient times...

We just had the heater replaced on our 11 year old refrigerator. At the time, I wondered when the repairman said that this heater should work for 6 or 7 months....HUH??? What happened to quality??? Guess we better start saving up for that new refrigerator, huh?
I feel your pain! We just had our water heater go - and it's only 3 1/2 years old!! Hopefully it's an easy fix, since it's supposed to be a lifetime heater.

I think most things could be made to last longer, but we're such a disposable society we want new.

You're right, and I've got to admit that the younger generations are the worst... (me and mine included!). We don't have the impulse thing quite under control yet, so it's really simple to just say "Eh, it's old" and get a new one instead of waiting until you actually NEED it... it's not at all hard to believe how many college students have massive credit card debt...

My boyfriend just finished up Mechanical Engineering in school and they actually teach you how to make items so they last a certain amount of time. It's crazy! It's how the companies make money I guess. Not making any money if something lasts 20 years. But I thought it was still crazy that they actually teach them to do it! Oi!
