DH and I haven't been much as wine drinkers, but now we are watching a movie every Sat. night with a bottle of wine. We need some suggestions for good wines. Not too sweet and not too dry. I know you are the ones to ask.

Hi, I love a good bottle of wine.. doesn't matter, white or red. I can drink a good bottle of 5.00 wine just as easy as I can a $25 or more bottle...
I had this awesome peach and honey wine, not too sweet, but oh so tasty. And I like Riesling.. yum.
I'll dig up the brand of the peach and honey wine. Man it was good. I got it at a wine shop over on the west side of the state. I was there for work and we went shopping downtown. Here is the Link. A lot of good wine there.

Not sure if I have a favorite. But I was just reminded of a tasty and inexpensive wine in another wine thread. Yellowtail Shiraz. Or Yellowtail Merlot. Or Yellowtail Cabernet Sauvignon.

I love me some Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. I've never met a shiraz that I didn't like.

The price of the wine, I have found, doesn't make it good or bad. The winery does. I like most all Washington State wines. And a few Californias. And I LOVE every Australian wine I've ever tried. I am closer to the west coast...so those are what we get.
My favorite type of wine is Merlot. Love it. Shiraz is a close second and a good Cabernet Shiraz blend is also a favorite choice of mine. Cab is dry though...if you don't like dry, stick to Merlot or Shiraz. Those are reds.
Whites - I love Chardonnay and Riesling and Zinfandels. My favorite white wine though is Gewurtztraminer. LOVE that stuff. Riesling is usually pretty sweet and Zin can be.
HTH!

I had found this stuff, I think it was Berringer, maybe a White Zinf or blush and it was only between $8-$12 a bottle. It was really good, and I started taking it with me to parties, it was that good. I will have to look the next time I go out to make sure that is the right one. Also, if you have Canal's Liquor Stores, they have a wine connousoure (sp) who can help you pick something you like!

I like either White Zinfadel, it comes in a box, I just can't seem to remember the brand right now ... the other is a Riesling, German (if I can find it) or Deming, NM.

I love a sweeter Reisling - and there is a really nice wine called Relax that comes in like a cobalt blue bottle. I can't get it here in MS because of something to do with how they buy their liquor (don't now if that's spelled right - it's late) It runs under $10 a bottle.
I don't really care for reds - they are just too dry for my tastes, but I'll try a sip if someone offers.
But then I'm a cheap date, I like Arbor Mist!

Gewurztraminer is a very good German white wine. "gewurz" means spice, so the grapes are spicy which gives the wines it's unique flavor. I like Beringer Reserve Cabernet. It's from California. But really any red wine will do. Chardonneys are too dry for me.
I like to try fruit wine. On the east coast they have apple wine, and in East Germany I had some homemade pear wine. They are so good! Escpecially if you can find it from a local maker.
Good luck. It's a fun road to find your favorite!

I'm in love with ice wine. It's sweet, but not syrupy like a port...yuck! I like Inniskilin's Vidal i.w. and love Gray Monk's Ehrenfelser i.w. Oh yum, yum, yum!

Totally agree on the Australian wines! I haven't had a bad one...Yellowtail Shiraz is my favorite easy drinking wine. I used to like sweet wines, but dh doesn't so it is in between. I also like a more expensive wine...Penfold's Shiraz/Merlot. It's yummy, but pricey. I don't know if you have Whole Foods Market where you are, but here they have a $5 After 5 event where you pay $5 and get 5 wine samples while you shop...also little hors' deuvres and recipes to go with the wines. The samples are generous enough to have me shopping schnockered. LOL! DH goes to make sure I don't overspend.
That is how I have found several wines I like, though.

There is talk of a Whold Foods getting built not far from me. I hope so. By the way, I think you should bring a designated driver for those sampling days!

Oh, believe me, I never drive when I drink! I am a lightweight. Dh samples, but it is not enough to mess with him...he weighs about 80 lbs. more than me. We have learned we need to eat dinner before, though. Sampling on an empty stomach is bad! Our Whole Foods does this every Friday and they have wines from different regions, so it is very interesting.

I prefer an oaky, buttery chardonay. High dollar Cake Bread, moderate La Crema, everyday Toasted Head or Kendall Jackson.
