Illnesses on Cruises
I see on the news that another cruise ship has hundreds of passengers sick. This seems to happen a lot. You'd think they could figure this out.

I've never been very interested in going on a cruise, but especially now, I don't think you could pay me to take one.
OCD is not an adjective.  It is not a personality quirk. It is not synonymous with being organized.  It is a complex and debilitating mental health illness that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and is defined by the presence of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. 💙 I am an OCD warrior and I fight for my son. 💙

Oh, and is it my imaginiation, or do these illnesses always seem to show up at the cruises that tour the Atlantic Ocrean? I don't think I've heard of any from Alaska or the Pacific.

Have have seen this a lot too. I think this will keep me from taking one as well. Just too many people using the cbins over and over again.

I want to do a cruise, but I get severely sea sick and have always been afraid. I cannot imagine being sea sick and having a virus at the same time... I would want to die!!!!

It's not just cruises, it's also airplanes, offices, and holiday parties! ;-) It's just a matter of someone having a very contagious bug & being around others in tight quarters/limited circulation/sharing food. The times I've heard of cruise illnesses have been the same years that I & others have caught the stomach bug at holiday parties! It's strong and fast. I'm usually very sanitary, but kind-of assume that if someone comes to a party and they're sick (which, with this thing, who feels like going to a party?!), they would be careful about finger food & such... and obviously I've been wrong! But, I was also playing cards this most recent time w/other people who caught it... playing cards & eating finger food at the same time, so that wasn't smart of me either.

Not at my parties. If you're sick, I forbid you to step into my house. I'm mean that way. :greenlol:

I am actually serious. If you're sick, stay home. If you're kid is sick, don't send him to my kid's party. Sounds bitchy, but all I'm asking for is common sense.

Oh I know - I never found out who caused the recent one (I mean, they even owe me a day's pay, as I have no paid sick time!), but still haven't totally forgiven our aunt for the one 5ish years ago!! You can't always tell if someone's sick though, unless they tell you.

My former boss was really paranoid about that too (too much at times), though she could do a fast switch from "Keep your germs at home!" to "We need help, get in here!" if things got busy. ;) But we kept Lysol handy & weren't afraid to use it!! (Um, not on food tho...)

We've only been on a cruise once and didn't care for it. I can see why there are so many illnesses with the amount of people on and off the ships.

I agree! This occurs the same time you hear about norovirus break outs at colleges. I've been on tons of cruises and there has never been a problem.

Re: Illnesses on Cruises
There are sanitizing stations everywhere on cruise ships. If you eat at the buffet, sanitize your hands after you get your food and before you start eating because everyone and their brother have touched those tongs! We have been a cruise a couple times and we were constantly using sanitizer. The cruise ships we were on were super clean. I wasn't worried. Now we went to a wedding that was a potluck/buffet and everyone ended up with norovirus. It was awful. Cured me of ever eating at a potluck again if I don't know who prepared the food.

I have been on seven cruises and not once have we been sick(not to say other's are not) but I always keep in mind that others might not be as clean as me and I sort of reclean my room and we are big time hand soap everywhere we go.

I've been on several cruises - both winter and summer, and never had any problems. I think it depends on how careful you are with what you touch. I hadn't thought about the tongs at the buffet, though. I'll have to remember about that in the future.

Re: Illnesses on Cruises
I think people are too quick to get back out there as soon as they feel better, not realizing that they are still contagious. And I think a lot of people just don't care that they could quite possibly spread their germs. So maddening!! I am a germ freak and I keep my kids home most of the winter. I don't take them to indoor play areas, don't eat out at restaurants, etc.... My kids are still pretty little, so once they get over having to lick their hands and touch their faces all the time, I will let them live in the real world again! LOL!!!

Oh and going on a cruise is so NOT appealing to me! My parents have gone on quite a few and loved it, but I tend to get motion sickness. :bluewaiting:

I've been on 3 cruises ... 2 Disney and 1 touring Greece/Turkey. The Disney cruises had sanitizing stations everywhere!! Also, before you went in to the dining room they had employees handing you sanitizing wipes. Never had any issues even with my boys. And, in Greece, I brought hand sanitizer with me. Again, no problems &/or issues.

LMAO! But I completely agree with you! But brother and my one sister constantly bring their kids to family functions even when they have a sick child. And I have made comments to them that its not fair to the rest of us, nor is it good for the sick kids to be around my dad, who has a compromised immune system due to numerous bouts of cancer. And that particular sister is a nurse too! But they are more concerned with what they want to do. Drives me bonkers!

I just carry a bottle of hand santitizer and use that wherever I go to protect myself and to hell with everyone else! keeps me healthy :-D
