Wow - *nobody* else says "soft drink"?!?!! Weird! ;) But I don't see any of the other Indy gals responding yet (except Clarissa who kind-of counts, lol!). "Pop" is also common here and I think of it as short for "soda pop," but I'd never say soda; that's something you bake with! But yeah, we say soft drink! (And if you ask for either Coke or Pepsi at a restaurant and they don't have it, they always tell you which line of products they carry; they'd never substitute the "other" one without telling you, which it seems some of you have experienced elsewhere!)

I typically say 'soda' but I also say 'pop' but sadly I don't know why I say soda more often.

I've lived in Indiana, Chicago and both sides of Northern WI - not even sure how I picked it up.

I have had people comment and say "oh, you say soda too"

good question though - nice to have something like this to chat about

My husband grew up south of Boston and always called it TONIC. I grew up in Texas and Connecticut and call it SODA.

people who ask for pop in South Carolina are tourists
Most people I know say either soda or Coke - but I was raised by a mother from New York and a father from California and we were raised saying "soft drink"

At most restaurants I take the "easy" route and just say "Diet, please..." That is usually generic enough that I get a Diet Pepsi, Coke, or whatever it is that the restaurant sells.... LOL!

I was born in southern Texas, they said Coke, what flavor.
I grew up in KC where it was called soda by Fast food people.
My family in subs of Detroit call it pop.
Personally I say coke, and mean I want a good old red can/cup/bottle preferred of Coca cola.

Re: So.. do you drink pop, or soda, or ... what?
I call Texas home now, but I grew up in the Army! And growing up my folks didn't let us drink "sodas" or "pop". But when I hit college, my drink of choice was "Coke", even though I really drank Sprite most of the time in the dorm, though went I went clubbing it was Rum & Coke.

Now-a-days, I drink Diet Dr Pepper. If the restaurant doesn't serve that I ask for a mixed Coke (3/4 Diet and 1/4 Regular). If they don't have Coca-Cola/Coke and only serve Pepsi, I drink water. If they don't have DDP, but do have Coke Zero, then I'll take that over the mixed Coke.

Here on Long Island we drink soda. My niece and nephew in Michigan call it pop. My relatives in Massachusetts always called it tonic.

I'm on the "coke" "pepsi" word when I order, but if I had to go with the two choices...here (Manitoba, Canada) it would be pop!

LOL! Your too funny Leslie! Maybe she means Dr. Pepper!

Born in Western New York it was "Pop"
Grand-Parents in Ohio it was "Pop"
Living four years in Delaware in Elementary it was "Pop" ---- way back dark ages of the '60's
Moved to Texas at age of nine and got this strange look and laughter the first time I said "Pop!" Last time I said it, too!

Same thing happened when my cousins moved down from Ohio when they were in high school. "Pop" was said one time and that was the end of that dreaded northern terminology for "SODA."

In Texas it depends on the region. If your speaking specifically it is brand. In general it is soda. And then if you go over to the backwards part of the state where Larry is from they can get into some strange things like "sody" or "sody pop." The backwards part of the state where the draw of the Texas accent runs deep and thick is East Texas. Just ask Angela as her family is from the Tyler area.

As for me I drink Dr. Pepper. And the 10/2/4 Dr. Pepper in the "GLASS" bottle from the Stephenville Facility is like drinking heaven on earth! Hey, Dr. Pepper is a Texas Soda from Waco. What makes life really really miserable is I went to Washington DC in 1997 and it took me three days to find a Dr. Pepper. I got really strange looks requesting it in every store I walked into.

Here in Central Cali, we call it soda. Usually you ask the server if they have Coke or Pepsi products, and most often around here it's Coke actually. As far as what I order, Iced Tea. Doesn't usually get messed up that way!

And the "Dinner vs. Supper" debate can be found here.

Growing up in Indiana, it was always pop. After moving to upstate NY it was then soda. Now that I live in the south, I have stuck to soda, but alot of places actually go by the name.
