Graphing each device on my router

Post by otherdave »

I'd like to preface this by saying I'm really new to Cacti and SNMP. I tried to search the forums but I don't really know what I'm searching for so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I apologize if this has been asked before.

At home I have my desktop machine (Linux), a linksys router running third party (sveasoft) firmware which has SNMP turned on.

Last night I set up some graphs for my desktop and router and I gotta hand it to Cacti - it was a breeze to setup! I have pretty graphs and I'm happy.

What I would like to do is graph the network usage by host so I can see how my traffic is moving around through my machine, my fiance's laptop etc...

So my question is: Who's job is it to tell me this? Should the router be able to tell me and I need to find out how to get at that data? Do I need to run an SNMP agent on every machine?

What about devices like my TiVo and PS2 that don't have SNMP, can I ever get those usage statistics?

Thanks for any help - I just started learning about this stuff yesterday (as a fun side project) so forgive my ignorance.

The router will not beable to tell you per device... :(

You have 2 options, a managed switch which you can graph, or snmp agents on your devices.
