Exporting graphs: how does it work?

I'd like to use cacti's export feature, so that the graphs don't take so much time to load, but I don't use the cmd.php for anything right now. All of my collection is by an external program.

How does the export feature work, and what do I need to run to get it to automatically create my graphs from my external RRDs?
