SNMPWALK Not Working

Post by kiran20 »

All,

I have installed net-snmp on my windows 2003 server along with Cacti. Using snmpconf I created snmpd.conf file. Registered my net-snmp agent with windows services and started it. Now when I do

snmpwalk -c public localhost it works fine

but if I do

snmpwalk -c public 172.19.10.10 it doesn't work.
I get timeout errors.

172.19.10.10 is a remote host, I couldn't get my snmpwalk to work with any remote hosts. Please help me with this.

Thank you
Kiran

Go to the remote host an issue snmpwalk -c public localhost.
If it doesn't work then SNMP isn't correctly configured on this machine. In this case check that the SNMP daemon is running and have a look at the SNMP config file.
If you can snmpwalk local please check in the SNMP config file that your cacti machine is allowed to query the SNMP OIDs.
A bit vague but it depends on the operating system ...

Thomas,

Thank you for your quick reply. When I do,

snmpwalk -c public localhost on remote host It works fine.

But when I tried to do snmpwalk from a remote host it doesn't work.

From my linux machine, I can do snmpwalk to this remote host fine.

Strange windows world.

Thank you
Kiran.

All,

Here is what it looks like.

C:\usr\etc\snmp>snmpwalk -c public 172.19.10.10
Timeout: No Response from 172.19.10.10

Now if I go to 172.19.10.10 and do

snmpwalk -c public localhost, it works fine.

Please let me know if anybody has any ideas.

Thank you
Kiran

Hi Kiran,

I would suggest the following.
On your Windows Server check the properties for your "SNMP Service".
The security tab should have the setting "Accept SNMP packets from any host" activated - or if the setting "Accept SNMP packets from these hosts" is marked then you should list all hosts allowed to query the Windows host.
