Syslog Search Regular Expression - RegEx - Exclude - Not

I see "Enter a regular expression" in the Search field in the Syslog plugin tab. It works as expected for me if I do a simple search for a word, but what if I want the search results to exclude entries with a word? I have not been able to figure out the syntax to enter. I put the word 'successful' in the Search field and I get lines with that word shown, but what do I put in the Search field to show all lines except those containing a word? Thank you.

There is a custom SQL option where you can construct a SQL Where expression. Might take some trial and error, but it works.
