SNMP Issue

Post by MasonL »

Having an issue on a fresh install of Cacti 1.2.3, two Poweredge 1950 servers running windows server 2008r2 both are showing "SNMP::get() No response from 'server-ip'". The local host is showing limited graphs, including and limited to: logged-in-users, processes, total-poller-items, polling-time, and uptime. I've gone through the windows firewall and enabled snmp traffic on the host and made sure port 161 is open for the 2 servers it is attempting to monitor. Please let me know if you'd like to look at the logs or anything, would really like to get cacti up and running since it has a lot of cool templates and features.

M-F 9:00-5:00 I respond in under 20mins usually.

Thanks, Mason

Cacti is operating on windows 2008 r2 just like the others. They're all PowerEdge 1950 servers.

Have you tried an SNMPWALK to see if you can query the boxes?

I used the Paessler snmptester tool and could read uptime and scan interfaces with it from my host server. I am new to SNMP in general though and if that way is unreliable I'm open to trying more reliable methods.

If the server can read it, so should Cacti. It uses the server's IP address. Make sure the community strings (auth credentials if SNMPv3) are right. I would start with SNMPv1 or v2c then move onto v3 when you get it happy. Also the host should be able to read from itself. How about the second unit?

The Paessler snmp tester makes you input the snmp version and community string in order to attempt snmpwalk, I played with the snmp version early on in cacti before I used that tool to figure out the servers run v2c. If you know where to go to edit the actual snmp version settings I can give v3 a try.

I haven't looked at that since I got it working years ago, and time won't permit at this time. Life is happening all around me.

Ok, last question then. Is there anything except snmp permissions that I need to have on the devices I'm attempting to monitor? I also did a manual install since the auto-installer wanted me to delete mysql and reinstall.

Not that I am aware of. I have found that using a third party monitoring tool for Windows targets works better (for me). I use SNMP Informant. Provides nice graphs and works rather well 'out of the box'. Version 1.3 is what is shown.

As cool as those look, I'd like to get the snmp service working first before I move on to getting more information to deal with and configure. Enabled debug level of logging and am getting these returns for one of my servers that's only responding over icmp ping.
