[HELP] Hardware requirements

Hi!

I'm pretty much a noob about monitoring and I was asked to analise how much hardware do we need to run cacti under unix.

We are about one thousand devices to monitore. There is a "best" unix distribution for cacti? How can I measure how much RAM, processor and HD do we need according to the number of devices and data sources?

Sorry if it a dumb question, but I didnt find anything about how can I measure it.
