1-minute polling in 1.1.38

Post by waterboy »

I am hoping someone can tell me how to get 1-minute interface traffic graphs from a stock Cacti 1.1.38 install. I have followed a few guides, tried a few things, but something is still not right. I created a 1-minute Data Profile, changed the Data Source to use the new profile, modified the cron job, and that does seem to work for 1 and 5 minute graphs, but the hourly/daily/yearly graphs don't look right, especially the yearly graph, it has very strange spikes and the MAX values aren't even close to what is on the graph.

I have seen mention of 1 minute polling in various threads, but at this point I have no confidence in how to make it work properly.

Thanks for any guidance!

This is what the 1.2 1-minute data source profile looks like. Your's should be similar. If you change the data source profile of a data source/graph, I believe you should remove an associated RRD's.

Thank you for that info! I wasn't aware 1.2 had a preset 1 minute poller. Just for grins I've loaded that up and started graphing. Sure enough, I still see weird results on the graph. See attached. Notice the big spike that isn't accounted for in "Maximum". The weird thing is, if I zoom in, it does show the spike accurately for Maximum, at 8.72Mb/s.

I also noticed that in my Cacti 0.8.8h install, the first graph is an "Hourly (1 Minute Average)", but for 1.1 and 1.2 it shows "Daily (1 Minute Average)". Could that have anything to do with it?

Thanks!

The periods over which data is aggregated/averaged and kept is important. Occasionally, routers can report spikes due to one issue or another. There is a feature called SpikeKill which can remove these if you believe that they are in error though I've never configured/used it.
