SImple question - adding interfaces to existing device?
I've just configured a new interface on one of our routers, and it's not showing up in Cacti's interface list. Presumably there is some sort of cache in the database of the available interfaces... how do I refresh that cache?
try clearing poller cache
I don't know if this is going to work, but it doesn't harm:
Under Utilities:
System Utilities -> Clear Poller Cache

Thanks, but that's not it... still not in the list.zanaguara wrote:System Utilities -> Clear Poller Cache

Clearly the correct solution but terribly non-obvious.
Having just migrated somewhat dyslexically from 0.6.8 to 0.8.6c, more than a few things are different. Instead of simply having to click on "refresh interfaces" in the host list we must now re-execute an "associated data query" by clicking on a non-intuitive green circle (open?). Now that I understand the model of operation this makes more sense. Re-executing the query isn't so bad once you know how and why.
Perhaps "refresh interfaces" could be added to the device list again. I'd hate to cross-post this as a feature request, so this will have to suffice.
I'd also suggest adding this tidbit to the FAQ. Perhaps "sticky" the solution reply somewhere?
Regardless, Cacti is still a wonderful tool!

is that it? just the green circle?
i also have new interfaces configured on a router being monitored by cacti. i too hit the little green circle... and it showed many new interfaces were queried... but nothing new is in the graphs section... the new interfaces (which are live and passing traffic) have not been added to the graph.
i have refreshed my page so i'm not fooling myself with old information... what else do i have to do to get the new interfaces in the graphing?
thanks

You do need to create the graphs still. Go back to the Device page and choose Create New Graphs at the top. Data sources that have graphs of the selected type already will be grey. Your new ones will stay black.danno wrote:i also have new interfaces configured on a router being monitored by cacti. i too hit the little green circle... and it showed many new interfaces were queried... but nothing new is in the graphs section... the new interfaces (which are live and passing traffic) have not been added to the graph.

thanks! -- but to be sure...
when i 'create new graph' will this create a whole new graph, alongside the old one? will i be left with two graphs, and/or will the information from the already existing ports be in the new graph (we don't want to lose historical information for pre-existing interfaces, or have it in another graph)
btw, thanks for your quick reply. the o/s community does rock!

maybe i can beat you to it- the response i mean
i went ahead and followed your directions before hearing your response... and it worked.
the old information for the pre-existing ports is still there, and it really didn't create a new graph (despite the menu option you are forced to select) but rather added the new interfaces to the existing graph.
so it worked.
thank-you very much. danno.

Yes - you'll get one graph per interface. The existing ones won't be touched. What are you expecting to see? Many lines all on one grid, or some sort of "stack"?danno wrote:when i 'create new graph' will this create a whole new graph, alongside the old one? will i be left with two graphs, and/or will the information from the already existing ports be in the new graph (we don't want to lose historical information for pre-existing interfaces, or have it in another graph)

I believe you can do this sort of thing with custom graph templates.
Personally, I use drraw.cgi or raw rrdtool and do it outside of Cacti using Cacti's RRD files, and leave cacti to collect the data, but that's mainly because I haven't got around to looking at it properly yet, and Cacti's many layers of templates gets me tied up!
that's a great idea
i went about it in the opposite fashion... hooked up cacti completely and will later work to just use the rrd files created via cacti.
that's a great idea... not to bash cacti's interface, but it' not for everyone. we will want to show customers their bandwidth outside of the cacti interface, so cacti's own itself won't be up to the task (by virtue of being itself i guess.)
anyway, thanks for the help and the idea.

If the customers just need to view the graphs, the interface is pretty intuitive. Especially if they only have access to their hosts' graphs. Just manage the rights carefully, we didn't received any customer complaint here. But do as you wish
Anyway, there is a learning curve for the management interface, but it is the price of power.
(Actually, there was one complaint, about internationalization, but duplicating and translating the templates did solve the problem easily)
